Oil pump cavitation. BMW is very aware of this issue when major engine service is done, oil pan gasket replacements, and oil filter housing gaskets.
BMW issued a TSB noting that the oil pump needs to be primed using the following procedure after completing work like this. See page 2 of the TSB regarding oil pan gasket replacements, and oil filter housing gaskets.
