Yes, it is cosmoline. BMW puts it in the body panels to prevent corrosion. I get it coming out of the corner of the doors, the trunk and the hood. Rapid Remover is a water based adhesive remover that works well on exterior body panels. Simple Green diluted down works well under the hood and in the engine bay. I use a pump sprayer filled with RO water to wet my engine bay, spray liberally with Simple Green, scrub with brush or wipe with rag as needed and rinse with the RO water.
