I've heard it conjectured that the 2 series has had consistently better quality because of the fact that it's generally one of the last models to get the new gadgets, gizmos and features and thus by the time they make it into the 2 they are well tested and have the bugs worked out. They generally get less of the frills so there is less to go wrong.
I'm also hoping that the Toyota quality control / testing that went into the B58 engine helps as well.
