I'm not sure that it's much louder. You can definitely hear a difference between open and closed when you are burbling around urban streets, the note difference is quite distinct. But since it seems to open when you floor it anyway, there is no difference when it really matters so to speak.
I'm no expert on the aesthetics of of exhaust note, I am sure keener folk would appreciate the difference more.
