Ordering new is awesome and a great way to get exactly what you want, but if CPO is still something you're thinking about, don't give up on it because of this experience. Really, CPO isn't a bad way to go if you can find the right car. I love my M235i and BMW, but my only sore spot with BMW is what I perceive to be quite high depreciation, particularly in the first few years. I think this has a lot to do with the high lease rate for new BMW's which tends to flood the market with 2-3 year old cars, typically at BMW dealerships because there are financial incentives to lease a second or third BMW. Fortunately, due to a number of factors, I was able to purchase my car at a much better than average discount so the initial hit of BMW depreciation for me was somewhat muted. That said, discounts on newly ordered BMWs aren't generally very impressive which makes CPO very attractive. Best of luck with your search.
