On my car, the 1-2 shift is jerky first thing when the car is cold. It just kind of winds up in 1st, and them slams into 2nd.
I've found that if after I pull out of the driveway, and do the reverse-forward shift, if I just let the car idle in gear for a few seconds before driving off the first shift is much smoother. Sort-of feels like the transmission just needs to build pressure or something, or the fluids just aren't flowing yet.
Then again, I'm on a cul-de-sac, so I just sit in the road for 5 seconds. Busy road would be a different story.
