The main thing here of course is that Villeneuve is already ahead of Schumacher at the point that they touch. Schumachers front wheel hits the sidepod of Villeneuve.
So there is no more 'defending of position' or 'defending/continuing the racing line'.
So in all these kind of crashes it's very important who's ahead at the moment of impact.
And of course at the point of impact Villeneuve was completely on the inside on the curbs. There was no place for him to go. (very clearly displayed at 1:53 where SCH drives into VIL)
SCH got punished for an avoidable crash
