All of the ones I have seen (far from a long list) use either 4 or 5 digits to pair to the phone, with the PIN being either all zeros, all ones, or a straight sequence starting at one. Something other than that is a good start, but that's all it is - a start.

You might be able to pair with the Automatic dongle w/o using the app, but the data would be useless. It uses a proprietary data protocol over an encrypted bluetooth connection, not the standard OBDII protocol. It seems like this would essentially make it secure, yes?
BTW, I use the Automatic dongle with DashCommand on OS X and it works great, love it. Very useful for making sure the engine is fully warmed up before I get into some shenanigans.
