I agree with you that it's not a traditional M car, but if you look up it's development you'll find that the 1M project was barely OK'd and the time frame/budget was way less than what could've been.
But it is definitely an M car, and a very good one too. There was no way that BMW was going to put a brand new engine in that chassis, a V8 would've ruined all the dynamics and engineering a new inline 6 (NA or FI) would have been pointless when there was an already made engine that was perfect for the job (the N54).. And no one even mentioned how severely underrated the engine was in the car... It's pushing ~331 hp / 362 tq to the wheels when they rated the engine at 335hp/370tq. Those numbers definitely don't add up considering that crank hp is ~10-20% less than hp to the wheels. Meaning that the engine should've been rated at around 370-400hp/400-430tq...
When they decide to drop an S55 into the 2 series is when the M2 will be born.. (Along with LSD and suspension improvements) Not this relabeled 235is... Lol
