Not bad test numbers from conservative Edmunds.

The $650 M Sport brakes repeatedly brought the 228i to a stop from 60 mph in a very short 111 feet, all while remaining very composed and controllable.

5.1 seconds 0-60, huh? Didn't the other test show 4.9? Both significantly better than the advertised 5.4.

The 228i is scoring about the same 0 - 60 times as the outgoing 135i.
In the past week I've read test times of 4.9 sec and 5.1 seconds with the auto tranny.
Dunno how they did that with 50 less HP and 42 less ft lb torque than the 135i, but they did it.
Those clever Germans.

It's all about that launch control and close gearing of the 8AT. If I can break 6 seconds in my 6MT I'm satisfied.

I wish somebody reputable would test the 6MT 228i. To me it doesn't feel as quick as the auto.

I don't think it is. The 435i 6MT was tested by C&D @ 5.2 seconds to 60 mph, and that's compared to 4.9 seconds for the 228i AT.

0-60 is not that meaningful, there will be a huge difference in power in reality when you aren't doing a launch and stopping at 60.

Wow and they are not even using 1 ft rollout as I thought they were. I know many car magazines do that but i just read they dont. For those of you interested in what roll out is there is an article about it on edmunds.com about how they test cars.

Yup, edmunds times are consistently slower than other car review sites since they don't use the rollout. That's why these results are quite impressive!

2011 BMW 335i  [0.00]
I test drove the new AT 228i at the dealership (before I had purchased my 335i) and it was a blast. The compact size of the car, the gearing, and the suspension make it a lot of fun to drive. The M235i hadn't arrived yet so I hadn't driven it but I thought the 228i would be sufficient. Plus, with a turbo engine, its easy enough to change a few components, add a new tune, and get a lot more power.

MT will never be as quick as the new ZF 8 speed auto. My 8AT f30 was significantly faster than my current 6MT f30. My MT almost feels like a de-tuned version of the auto.

I drove a 228 and it was awesome. The next day I bought a 428, only because I need a tad more room inside. If I could have been happy with the smaller size, the 228 was more than enough for me.

EDIT: I'm not sure where you read 'auto manual', but as other posters have pointed out, I don't see it.

The 228i has the ZF sourced 8-speed automatic with a torque converter (same as every other non-DCT equipped BMW). Edmunds, just like the rest of the automotive press, are too lazy and bored with their jobs to get the details right.

Yes, that is my impression as well, after comparing the 228i auto I test drove with my 288i 6MT. Although I think mostly it's because the auto is quicker off the line. If I do an aggressive clutch engagement around 3500 RPM as opposed to a more typical 1500 rpm, she pulls pretty hard. I think the MT can come close to matching the 8 speed 0-60, but you have to give it a pretty hard launch. For obvious reasons, I don't like doing that to my own car.

The Edmunds article does say it has a traditional auto - am I missing the mistake in the article ?

Yeah agreed and I think this is the same for the F30. I have a 6MT 328i and had a 8AT loaner a couple weeks ago and the auto felt like it had another 50 hp on my car. These motors really, really love the auto.
