Cool Comparison thanks.
After the braking comments, look at 4:40 in the video, M235i stops quicker than the Merc
I like the guys enthusiastic style and his driving pal at the track says fave beemer in last 10 years...how many weeks must I wait now

That was really entertaining. I love hearing Randy Pobst talk about the dynamics of the car, he really knows what he's talking about.

I was thinking the same exact thing. He also contradicts himself when he says "it's a good auto but it's still an auto", then later in the video Randy raves about the auto trans stating "you don't even need a dct" and he agrees with him.

He basically just called the E30 a street car that you can take to the track once in a while.
I guess he has no idea where the E30 came from or how it was developed.

Randy says it's his favorite BMW in the last 10 years - which would include the E46 M3, E92 M3, and 1M.

Pretty interesting comment...great video - god that Merc is ugly, but it is very quick.

best comparison I've seen yet....thx OP. in the side-by-side video on the track, you could see from the relative steering angles how much the CLA tends to understeer. that said, i don't get why everyone bashes its looks? it's a good-looking car in the flesh...arguably better looking than the m235i.

That's a fair comment on the looks, which are very subjective. I think, like the reviewer in the video, that the front of the Merc is alright, but it starts to look a little weird as your eyes head towards the back.

It almost looks like a cross between a regular sedan and a grand coupe - like their weird offspring or something...I also don't like the wheels and the tailpipes - which are even more subjective.

Just my opinion.

"Best BMW I've driven in the past 10 years" wow!... I noticed the CLA cost just as much as base m3 lol. They should throw more m-Perf parts like brakes and LSD to make the comparison more fair. Then the m235i will beat the dust off the cla

The M235i is a great car but the CLA45 is a beast of a car for being a 4-banger, it also looks mean as s***

The CLA might be a great car, but to my eyes the styling is really bad.

Agreed. This is a comparison between a "full AMG" Mercedes and a "less than M" BMW. The CLA won't be in the same league as the M2.

I'm not sure if I should be giving kudos to the M235i for it's performance at the track with the lack of an LSD or criticize the performance of the CLA45 AMG and only being marginally quicker...

I'm in the minority when it comes to the exterior design of the CLA. It's not too bad and it has grown on me. Almost like a Pug dog. Soo ugly that it's cute. I just absolutely hate the "tack-on" COMAND Nav screen that looks like such an after-thought. Literally looks like at the last second the designers realized they forgot to include a screen and decided to plop it in the middle.

I don't care what BMW says. This M235i should have a DCT transmission. If the 135is could get it, I'm not sure why you would leave it out for the M235i. I get it. You have to leave enough performance room between the M235i and the M2.

I love Mercedes-Benz and my 5-years spent as an AMG Specialist for them was splendid but in order for the CLA45 AMG to be able to compete with the M2, AMG will have to come out with a hard-core Black Series version to stay on par.

This seems like the first part of a companion video to the MT article discussed in this thread:

Just my opinion and I know this is a BMW forum, but I'll take the AMG I think MB has done a wonderful job in designing this car and appears more vibrant vs. the new 2-series ... BUT, throw in the inevitable M2 and then we'll see ...

I love how you compared the CLA to a pug

I can definitely see how the CLA can be attractive to some people. it certainly looks "different", but I'm just not a fan. Especially considering I really like the way the 2er looks.

You bring up a good point about AMG releasing a black series for the CLA45. I think you are spot on. But how much is that going to cost? The Black Series moniker adds quite a bit of $$ to the price. Or maybe they'll do a 507 Edition style upgrade?

I just wished BMW would come up with an M2 sedan or M2 Gran Coupe to challenge the fact that CLA has 4 doors.
