My M235i: Dyno w/ downpipes, chargepipe and new wheels!

Hey everyone!

I came down from my Las Vegas, NV residence to spend some time in my San Diego house this weekend, so I thought I'd get some mods done to M235i while I was at it! I bought the car down from Fresno last week and put 700 miles on it in 4 days. This week I put tried to put on another 300 to finish my break in so I could start the dyno and mod process! Here's a story about my day:

Swung by my buddy Brian's house at 11:30AM to pick him up and got to EAS (European Auto Source) around 12PM to get a baseline dyno on good 'ole ACN 91 octane. Got an average of 307whp/322wtq for the runs bone stock.

At around 1PM, I went to Evolution Racewerks (ER) to test fit and install their downpipe and charge-pipe.

The charge-pipe was a b*tch to install, so it took around 3 hours to finish the whole thing. The downpipe only took 30 mins or so, so it was super easy. The darn charge-pipe took up most of the time because of the confined space.

Went back to EAS after for an "after" dyno with the mods:

Picked up 12whp and 25wtq with no tuning. You can DEFINITELY feel a huge difference with the downpipe though. The turbo comes on so much quicker and the torque is just plain ridiculous now. It pulls very nicely all the way to redline!

VMR Wheels (Velocity Motoring) was next door, so why not test fit some wheels for the car while we were at it? The sad part is this car does not fit anything aggressive and it seems the fitment is a little more disappointing than the 1 series, lol.

I got the VMR v705 (18x8 +45) squared setup which was ~2 pounds lighter than the stock wheels! The 1-series rim fitment and 2-series fitment seem to be a lot different. I recommend contacting VMR and seeing what they would recommend for you since they used my car for fitment/measurements. I am not a poke / rolled fenders guy since I get whatever fits on stock body to run wider tires for the road-course. I will be running a 245/255 tire setup most likely with these rims.

Overall, I really like the rims. Not only are they lighter, but they look better and give the car a "cleaner" look over the stock rims in my opinion. I kept the BMW centercaps because I like how the blue/white matches with the white car and blue brakes .

It was a long day, but it was nice to get some things ironed out. I will be getting an intake test fitted the upcoming week, so I'll post an update about that. Then on to the JB4 tune and dyno .

Really impressed with the big numbers just for the boltons. Now I'm wondering how much more a less restricted exhaust (from the downpipe back) would give without the tune, say the M Performance exhaust for example?

Is the downpipe catted? Any engine codes so far from the change? Keep the thread going as you make more changes. Love to see how this works out and the different options you experiment with. I was thinking a JB4 stage one as a first mod to keep it simple without having to splice anything. Maybe a better air filter too. Need to keep the car as close to stock as possible given it's a lease.

Nice, get ready for more fun with the JB4. They have seen about 415 whp on the 435 N55 with e85, so you should see a great pop from your mods even without e85.

Very nice. I'm hoping throw mine on the dyno as well shortly after getting it. Those are some good numbers and gains for no tuning.

The stock exhaust is pretty large in diameter and it didn't seem like much of a restriction at all (pipes alone). But I don't know how it looks within the muffler though.

The downpipe is not catted, but I am surprised it doesn't smell as much as I thought. I got the emissions light on the drive back (to be expected), but the JB4 is supposed to fix all that. I think you can splice it in a way that its 100% reversible.

Thanks! I am hoping to keep it on 91 for now and just get an intercooler to see how it does. I ran E85 on my other cars and its a little bit of a hassle for me and I just want to not have to plan out my routes this time lol.

I got 25% tint and it is stock for now. Getting the H&R springs in a few weeks once they start shipping out.

They said a few millimeters and possible another half inch in the rear. But I don't want anything meeting my fender as I want to be able to run 255 or 265 rear tires. Its not the fender that's really the issue, the shock is pretty close to the hub so you can't have anything too far in.

I wish we had more to test, but it was getting late.

I don't think there are any gains, it was more of a "response" and "precaution" mod for it. The stock one can expand and just pop open under boost, so I got something to where the diameter won't flex or have the ability of really popping under high boost. The car was on the lift and the charge-pipe was available, so it was just something I wanted to do.

It is weird that I like the sound of the exhaust now more than stock and way more than the MP exhaust, which has the popping, but isn't deep from the vids I have seen. This may be the way to go. Very nice.

I am debating on a catback since I want it louder. Its virtually as quiet as stock with the downpipe lol.

Looking for early this coming week or if I have to put it off till the following weekend then I will. That JB4 and Down pipe are what I'm going to do, should be enough for a sub-13 daily driver.
