228i - Sport Automatic with paddles?
Hi all,
I've been looking the 228i coupes that have arrived at US dealers. There appears to be some inconsistency with the automatic transmission options. The spec sheet on BMWUSA says that the 8-speed Sport Automatic with paddle shifters is standard. When I build my own, the paddles show up on the car, along with the stubbier gear lever and leather boot. However, I've also seen cars that have the standard gear lever and no paddles. Any ideas as to why? I would be pretty peeved if my car didn't come with the Sport Automatic. For example, both of these cars are 2014 M Sport 228s: http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-s...66351360&Log=0 http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-s...65986751&Log=0 |

The sport automatic transmission with shift paddles is standard on all 2-series in the US. The STEPTRONIC without paddles is a no cost option. Looks like dealers are getting confused and adding the non paddle version by mistake.

The sport steering wheel and pedals are only available with the M Sport package in the US. For example you can not get these options with the Sport Line package.

The test car I drove had no paddles. However when we went to enter the production order we found the paddles were no charge (I did not get Msport or Sport line). Another oddity was that there was an alarm listed in the production options.

Im very interested in this as well. I test drove a 228i yesterday and there were no paddle shifters and no Sport+ mode, even though the BMW website clearly states both as standard features on all trims. I emailed my sales adviser about it, Ill update this thread when I hear back from him.

Paddles
My understanding is that you need Sportline or M on the 228i to get the paddles. There is a straight Steptronic option without them. I ordered my 228 with Sportline and the paddles are a line item.

So I just got an email back from my Sales Advisor and he confirmed that yes, the paddle shifters (Sport Automatic) are a no cost standard option on all trim levels of the 228i. He said they have been mistakenly selecting the STEPTRONIC option. The Sport Automatic option also adds in Sport+ mode and Launch Control, which is NOT included with the STEPTRONIC option.

Upsetting
So, yes I ordered mine and it shows STEPTRONIC but just need to confirm with the dealer - it's already end of production too. As a customer, I am special ordering this assuming no option is put on the vehicle without my consent yet someone is overriding this and deleting Launch Control and Paddle Shifters by selecting the STEPTRONIC for me?! I am so angry man, I had no idea now it's obviously too late since it is there on my order form and waiting at the port for a ship.
Really bad ordering guide and communication from BMW to its dealers and customers. Last edited by SteveAustin; 04-14-2014 at 02:52 PM.. Reason: Added content |

I don't understand the logic of even having STEPTRONIC for them to select. This isn't communicated anywhere on the site so I feel like I am not even getting the standard options and am being shorted because of their mistake. I will wait to hear their explanation but this is total BS!

My 228i Sport has paddles. It is standard. But the option for Steptronic almost tripped me up when I configured it. Seems strange. When all is said and done what possible advantage would the Steptronic option be? It's the same tranny. If you see the option...just say NO!

All of these things appear on the build sheet used by your CA to place the order. That is what you have to be worried about. And if you search the inventories at your local BMW dealerships and look at the interior pictures, you can see what's happened. Take a look at this: http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=978139 |

I can't remember when it was removed. I would guess at least a month ago, maybe longer. Still no alarm option on their website for the 228i... |

I'm glad I'm ordering a manual transmission, so I don't have to worry about this.
Seriously, though, this is such a bizarre decision on BMW's part. Why needlessly complicate the assembly process by having two versions of the same transmission--especially when choosing one over the other doesn't save the customer any money. I find it hard to believe that someone would *not* buy an automatic 228i just because it came with paddle shifters. BMW should never have even given folks the Steptronic option. |
