Mineral Grey 228i at the DC Auto Show

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hi,

This mineral gray 228i is at the DC Auto Show now. I was not really impressed. The way to go for the 2 Series Coupe is the M235 only. The 228i is so plain.

The M steering wheel is day and night difference from the standard one. I wish I had a closer pic so you can see it in couple of pics

Definitely agree. Wheels, bumpers, steering wheel, lower suspension and seats make it well worth it. And you can't order EBII without it

One can sense that the latest bimmers are Designed in two ways.
A truley great looking car as the M3, with the M Sterring wheel, and all the cool bits.
As opposed to the standard stuff, which are getting more and more bland, next to older generations.
Which lead to, an increased attention to choose the right colours and packages, and my guess, more money in accesories and equipment.
Wrong speced bimmers with wrong colours... Reminds me of Audi, boring and bland imo!

Agree. BMW lost its way on design and colours as you say boring. Think they have run out of ideas except let's make a car for every niche in the market.

You know, if you ignore the badging that comes with the M-Sport package, I don't think it's disagreeable to say that you get your money's worth out of it. It's just a $700 premium over the sport package, and you net a new set of bumpers, a spoiler lip, and a more aggressive steering wheel. The wheels and trim finishing are a neutral difference, but either way, it's hardly just a "marketing" package.

Is the M3 and M4 still there? I'm heading down Friday.

(PSU Alum? I'm guessing due to your name.)

I'll play Devil's Advocate here.

Conservative design typically correlates with higher sales. The volume of 1, 3, 5, and 7-Series you see on the road typically don't have the M-Sport workings. They're less off-putting to your average buyer. You always have the option to spec up your car to look the way you'd like, and in this case, it's not much of a cost premium versus, say, a sport package-equipped model.

They can capitalize on both demographics by increasing the margin of conservative vs. radical styling options.

While I have no doubts that the M235i is going to be quite the performer, I have a feeling the 228i is going to be the best overall once you factor in price/options/performance. I know a few guys here, including myself, think that the 128i was just a better car and was maybe considered the better driver because of the N/A I6 but the 135i was more attractive because of it's potential. But now that both trims are turbo, unless you really, really need everything that comes with the M235i, I think the 228i provides most of what the M235i offers but at a lower price.

Exclamation

Until it arrives at the Chicago Auto Show, I'll post a comment based on seeing is believing. Looking at the photos, the mineral gray 228i is a major improvement over it's predecessor.

M-Sport Brakes on Regular Sport 228i

Mineral Grey looks nice - as others have said before, it is a good all around color to hide dirt and grime so your car always looks reasonably clean. The downside is that even when detailed, it doesn't quite look as great as other colors such as black, white or blue.

Has anyone else noticed the odd combination of blue m-sport brake calipers on this regular sport package? This is not a configurable combination on the bmwusa website and the blue brake calipers are kind of hidden behind the sport wheel spokes a good bit. I think the m-sport wheels have more sparsely spaced spokes making the calipers more visible. I wonder if the bmwusa configurator is wrong or if this is just an impossibly-optioned car??

Cheers!
