Automotive News reports that the sale date for the Active Tourer in the U.S. will be early 2015.

The production Active Tourer will look essentially the same as the Active Tourer Concept and will share MINIs engines and FWD "UKL" platform. It will also come in a longer-wheelbase version with a third row of seats.

The Active Tourer is one of several new FWD vehicles which BMW will use to push into new segments. Ian Robertson, BMW AG's board member for sales and marketing said: "With the Active Tourer, we will get a lot of new customers again. They will come out of the premium segment and from some of the volume players."

Separately, BIMMERPOST has heard that the Active Tourer will be introduced as the "2 Series Active Tourer" and not as a "1 Series GT" as previously assumed. It will be offered in both FWD and AWD models.

This is getting ridiculous!
BMW is too interested in saturating the market, and IMHO, runs the risk of ignoring driving dynamics and driving pleasure.

Yea BMW needs to slow down but then again it is how the industry is going. Porsche also plans to expand their model lineup with 9 more cars within the coming years

Like you say, people bitched when Porsche started selling SUV's and now they sell more SUV's than sports cars. You have to grow to survive especially BMW since they don't own a mainstream brand like Lexus/Toyota or VW/Audi/Porsche. Even Honda, Nissan so BMW has to broaden their assortment for economies of scale.

Why is BMW already badmouthing the 2series with something like this?

Just call it Active Tourer, or 1 series. It has 0 relation to the 2 series.

ouch! LOL. the 2-series badge just kinda got pee'd on! The nomenclature makes absolutely no sense now.

so the 2 and 4 are coupes.....but the 2 Active Tourer FWD mommymobile somehow qualifies as a 2? uhhh..

the concept from a few years ago (looks like a VW, to be honest)

And your beloved 1 series is going FWD, sooooooooooo that means your car is basically a Mini right ? Funny how that logic can work.

Not sure this is a 1 vs. 2 series thing. The concept of this thread is an abomination. No matter what they call it...

I actually kind of like it, it looks like an SUV with those doors so who cares what it's called. Not much different than a Mazda so why does everyone get their panties in a wad over it.

well it's all going to hell really.

I actually also thought it looked like a certain VW. Maybe a little like this Golf 7 plus?

I hear it's gonna have a transversely mounted, turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder.
Slap a //M215 badge on that puppy and it'll sell like hotcakes

I really don't get why they would call this a 2-series.

Then again, I really don't get who would buy one, or why BMW would want to sell one.

The exact same thing was said when BMW started selling X5's back in 2001 and that turned out pretty good didn't it.

I suppose most people will buy or lease (mostly lease) anything with a logo that says BMW, whether it drives great or not. It is just a matter of status for them just like it is with Apple. There are better and cheaper options out there, but it is all about image and feeling better about yourself. BMW is taking advantage of this but I don't know how long it will last once there are too many of them on the roads.

There's no definitive word on the status of the 2-series Gran Coupe yet, but its existence wouldn't be decided by the 2-series Active Tourer since both cars are built on completely different platforms.

Jason, just to clear everything up, this is what we were calling the UKL 1GT for a few years now, right?

Mercedes has the B class, and before the last update they had the A class as mini-vans.

Don't forget the V class, R class, all the commercial vehicles... and the trucks! But still Mercedes-Benz it's seen as a premium and luxury brand. Why BMW can't do the same?
Does the SLS, CLS, C, S, and so on, has bad handling because Merc sell the FWD B class? Hell no. So why complaining about a car like that?
