Lightbulb Sibling Rivalry: BMW M235i Coupe vs M135i Hatchback

BIMMERPOST NEWS
Sibling Rivalry: BMW M235i Coupe vs M135i Hatchback

COMMENTS

The M135i hatchback will soon receive a sibling in the BMW lineup by way of the M235i coupe. They will share the same heart - the N55 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine making approximately 315-320hp, as well as the same transmission and other mechanicals. On paper, the two should achieve similar performance numbers, with a slight edge potentially going to the M235i coupe.

As for exterior differences, it's clear from these comparison photos. Besides the clear form factor difference (coupe versus hatchback), the M235i gets an overall sleeker look, especially the front end with its more aggressive bumper and large upsweeping air intakes, and slimmer headlights and kidney grilles.

No official specs have yet been released for the 2 Series, so we will compare physical specs (dimensions, weight, etc.) at a later time.

The coupe front looks pretty like its a hairdressers car. Still better than the hatchback though.

I wonder how an m235 hatch would look like. Both these cars look great.

The hatchback is atrocious. Shame, I like hatchback form, but not this form.

Awesome !! While the coupe is way better looking, I would have chosen the hatch if it were offered in the US for the practicality it offers. Having a VW GTI as my daily driver, the hatch form is amazingly versatile and practical for hauling large objects including my bike when needed.

How about a thread with the 2er and the 4er side by side?

Thanks for the great pics and coverage of the next great little Beemer

The [front]hatchback is straight obnoxious to look at. I wonder who thought about such a design and shame on the one who signed off on it.I wouldn't have it even if it was for free.

Sorry, 135 is flat ugly! I never liked the front of the 1 series either. The 2 series looks pretty good.

Oddly, I think the hatchback design is rather more distinctive when compared side by side with the coupe. The coupe lights have a vague Astra (Vauxhall/ Opel) likeness....Intrigued by the potential design of the rear lights, seem a slight departure from previous BM shapes, though internal hockey stick detail seems similar to current coupe.

that and the same front (meaning look at the shut lines of the hoof, bumper and top of headlight unit.) Conversions should be possible.

the 2 series Coupe looks a little cheap; especially compared to the 4er(death) Coupe

To be honest I have seen a million of these in Zurich (the hatches) and they look fantastic in person. They are SO unphotogenic....

The good thing about the M235i coming State side is that finally American tuners like Cobb will get interested in developing a tune for the N55B30 320 HP variant of the N55 block.

At this moment, only plug-in box tunes exist for the M135i sibling, no real ECU tunes.

Honestly, I'd take the F21. I might change my mind once I've seen the Coupe in the flesh... but it just looks abit.... "M'eh"... could be a Korean blob of a coupe...

But like I said before, I'm sure I'll warm to it.

I would still heavily consider the hatch if they would bring it to the states...

Wait.............the body panel appear to be the same.
Are these 2 cars build on the same chassis?
They call the one 1 series and the other 2 series
