If that is what you want, get an M3/M4. M2 (and previously 1M) is about entry-level M ownership, at entry level pricing. Don't expect all the bells and whistles...
I'd have to respectfully disagree with you. We already have the entry level it's the M Performance M235i. A full bred M car should be just that Full Bred. Not an imitation. It needs the bells and whistles and BMW already said they made the M Performance to welcome new owners to what the M model should be like.
So Yes to a carbon fiber roof, Yes it should have gotten the S designated engine and Yes to ceramic brakes. However, weight reduction is new to M models as previous generation Ms were heavier than the non M versions.

Ok. Yeah. I'd say I can ask for that stuff when the price is a rumored 55k. That's not far off the F80's $62,200.

Take away the bespoke s engine and yes add all that other race bred shit to the M2.

Carbon roof-yes
CC brakes-yes optional
Weight reduction-yes! Why it's hard to loose 75-100lbs off the m235? No.
Keep your DCT for the M3/4 and offer it only in MT and stick the s55 in it defined it'll be slower then the M3/4 and problem solved.

Don't do this (even thought I'll wait to see all the official details) I'm off to 981 cayman s as well like someone stated in the earlier reply.

A lot of 1st generation 1M owners would know what prospective M2 owners are going through and whilst a lot of us were not fully satisfied with the 1M specs initially, we were fully converted with the actual performance and most importantly, behaviour of the car itself. As long as it loses some weight, it really doesn't matter how M Division turns out the M2... as long as it's a M Division product, it should be a monster with or without S55 IMO.

Yes my bad. I can't see why BMW M wouldn't put the M-DCT in the M2.

Wonder how many prospective owners would chose the M-DCT or DCT option in a more nimble M2 (compared with M4)? My guess is more would opt for the manual....?

while i agree with most everything else, I disagree with the bolded statement. I believe the S designation should go to an engine that is vastly different than the streamlined, pedestrian engines like the N54/55.. so ASSUMING the engine they put in the M2 is simply a tuned N55 then it should not get the S designation

Money/costs/profits

Should be M-DCT but wouldn't be surprised if they used the 8 spd ZF.

I agree with EVERYTHING you just said and you beautifully illustrated why a mainstream engine shouldn't be in an M car to begin with IMO. Having said that I see a lot to be excited about. Let's hope BMW isn't coy about weight this time.

Like many here, I think I have a car problem.... scratch that; I know I have a car problem!
stop talking about the track and take you x6m already....you saw the video.

I like the stance of this car. Hopefully it has a thicker sidewall than 35/30 on the tires if 19's are standard... and the ride height looks perfect with little roll. Very well planted. This thing is hot.

I just took re-delivery of my M235i last week and thinking that I'll probably trade it in about 3 years for an M2

Idk though, we'll see. I'm in love with my car right now

The widened rear view looks very similar to 1M in its current mule form.. and you're right, reduced body roll (compared 235i) is most encouraging
