NP.

Actually, to be rigorous correct, it uses two sensors on the RV mirror, the one mentioned above and the small circular one at the top center of the mirror side.

The ECU measures the difference between the front and rear mirror sensors, and darkens the mirror when the light detected as coming from the front of the car is less than the light coming from the back. When you cover the sensor on the windshield side during the day, it registers as a big difference between the front and back light levels, with the front being much darker.

Conversely, if you cover the small round sensor on the mirror side of the RV mirror, it prevents the mirror from darkening at all. I know someone who made a small open/closed cover for that sensor from the top of a TicTac box. He flips it open when he wants the autodarkening to work, and closes it when he doesn't.
Yup, figured that was the case. I covered the front facing sensor and flashed my phone light into the rear sensor. All mirrors dimmed.

I finally had a chance to confirm that BMW did in fact forget to install dimming side mirrors AND adaptive headlights on my build. Now I need to go through the list and ensure nothing else is missing. :/

Well that's really disappointing to know. Please update us as to what they're going to do to resolve this issue. I hope they're not going to pay you out to walk away from the feature? Retrofitting adaptive headlights may not be possible either as it would have to be programmed with the electronics and maybe the harness isn't all there? I highly doubt they want to build you another one to spec just for those two options.

Damn, that sucks. Good luck bro. Some people merely got money back for this sort of thing. If they try to do that I'd fight it using the safety of the adaptive headlights as your main argument.

I'm a little concerned about the number of posts I see with verified "missing" things/features from the factory. Did someone go on lunch break during build?? I would certainly not expect that from BMW.

If it's anything like the US plant that builds SUVs the parts come down the line in sequence order synchronized with the chassis rolling down the line. Worker just pulls the parts from the chasis' bin and installs. If things get out of sequence or is missing idk how anyone would notice.

From what I remember, the factory will have a printed detail on what features to install on to the car and as it goes along the line the vehicle is fitted with the required items

This is mesmerizing to watch:

Time points: 9:34, 10:45 will show some sort of paperwork that's taped onto the vehicle and they reference that for what to install. However it's a F30 build it is still similar.

Great video.. Just checked out and slipped into that like a coma for ten minutes..

From a manufacturing background, I can easily see how options can be skipped in an environment like that. Especially with volume like they do.. But I have to wonder how much it has to do with moving options between packages like they do and how long it takes those changes to trickle down into every aspect of manufacturing down to extra spot welds, adjusting routines for different components and other sub-component assemblies like dashboards to catch up to model changes and options, etc...

Incredibly complex is a definite understatement, but when I see the fit and finish, I appreciate it that much more.

Soooo... About those 'missing features'. The service manager examined my car and showed me that they were all in fact there (doh!).

1) Side dimming mirrors - newer mirrors no longer have that noticeable film. The cut off happens below the black trim/film goes to the edge.

2) Since this is a cab, I have the wind breaker screen setup almost 99% of the time. This blocks out most light from hitting the mirror since it's a mesh that sits essentially in the path between RR mirror and the rear window. Long story short, mirrors weren't dimming because of the wind screen blocking most bright light and when you looked through mirror it seemed that only the RR mirror was dimmed because of the mesh...) Best way to test would have been the flashlight test referenced here..

3) The adaptive lights are in fact there, they're just much slower than previous generations. I did most of my testing against the garage door, I suspect/hope it moves quicker if the car is at speed or the wheel is turned more. On my other cars they turn in almost real time with the steering angle.

Anyhow, the dealer was great and very patient LOL. Oops.

Oh, good news then despite a bit of egg on your face lol. I'd rather have that scenario than actually have missing features.

My side mirrors barely dimmed when compared to my rearview mirror when I did my flashlight test. The rearview was almost black at one point and the sides barely dimmed at all. In fact, I really just noticed the sides brighten when I turned the light off. Didn't really notice them darken.

I do notice some lag while driving at night, but it's not too bad. I'd say around half a second.

Wow! I'm glad to hear you've got all your features. Turns out that the installation out in Europe is doing their job okay on your car.
