Excellent review. M235i is far better than the F82.

M2, being much higher in production volume and not going toe a 1 year only vehicle, should come in 7-8k under the M3. Dealers were selling the 1Mor mre than E9x M3's in the same showroom. That needs to not happen again. The M2 needs at least 365hp/360tq... Needs to be lighter, and AWD. I raced a M235 in a AWD M235 and simply destroyed the rear wheel drive 235... BMW also needs to dump the M off this cars name and the excessive Badges all over and in the car. It's simply a rebodied 135 with another 60-80 lbs of weight.

Sorry BMW but until you can get back into the sporting, fun drivers car business (BMW has gotten very soft), I'm possibly migrating. That ugly fat forehead nav screen needs to retract someplace. It's darn right ugly and ruins the rather so, so interior. The old 1'ers interior had more personality then this.

There's an S3 in my scope. Having driven the 235 and S3, the S3 is now the engaging drivers car, with a interior that would make an S6 owner comfortable, retractable nav screen, more standard equipment... While the soft kneed 235 is just a video arcade game car with so much computer control, numbness. It's a boring, tiring car to drive. Oh and the S is 4-5k less in base form. I'll give BMW a last chance with the M2.
So the 135 and the S3 has better interior than the 2 series and you want the M2 to be awd?

Hahahaha, to each his own. Looks like you'll need to hold on to your 135 for a while

still delusional

Maybe a modern M135 in coupe version.... and unlike the 135 and 1M it has real fixed caliper brakes... non sliding caliper shenanigans

There was a recent video comparing the M4 to the Porsche Macan. Prices are comparable and both do indeed have a back seat.

Pricing on the M4 is aggressive as is making Nav standard. I suspect fuel efficiency rules are in play here. Vehicles with below average consumption are being rationed by price. Fewer get sold, but higher margins make up for that. The NA V8 was definitely a victim of fuel efficiency rules.

Your joking right..?

The priorities you see are BMW marketing performance items to people, not performance cars, like in the past.

Your posts is contrary... & laughable.

i could afford an m3, its not really a matter of if you could, but if its worth the money.
we make about the same money and i guess its all about priorities.

i'd almost assuredly get an automatic, and i know my friend is getting a DCT.

m235i which has DHP standard and a "free auto" transmission is $43k. an m3/m4 with DHP and DCT (i know its different, but its the "auto") is $68k. is the m3/m4 worth $25k, i guess it depends on if you want that $25k for other things. personally in LA i would guess it probably isn't unless you track your car a lot (which my friend i doubt will. but hey its a "real M"). I'd rather blow that $25k on rent, or vacations etc. my friend lives with his parents and never goes out. everyones got priorities, i'm sure we'll both be happy with our choices.
Can't tell if you just threw him under a short bus or long bus =X

For the money, daily utility and useable power, you can not beat the M235i. Until the M2 shows up.

I like the f82 M4, but these cars have grown way beyond what the 3 series / M3 originally set out to accomplish.

No, but I did drive the new M3. Remember that this is not an "M" car, but the M235i will nip at the M3's heals on the track and is MUCH better mannered on the street. What the M3 does to your spine (yes I'm getting older just by saying that) on the frost damaged roads in Massachusetts is evil. Just the port installed LSD needed and WOW. I just found this forum, I will be posting a new thread in an hour when I have rights outlining my response to the drive.

Edit: Just posted my new thread. (http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1027305)

Agreed. They have 'sports sedan' nailed down to perfection. The coupe is fine, but adding 2 doors just makes it so much nicer for those of us with extra cargo. It's definitely their bread and butter...the sweet spot.
this^^

the article really said it best and I see a lot of rewording and spinning of the words but it still comes down to: most economical, most refined, most exciting.

M235i is eliminated from my shopping list for it's lack of 4 doors. Alpina is eliminated from my list because of it's boring (albeit nice and unique) interior and auto transmission (gotta have that DCT). M3 is the only car for me. It's not inexpensive but makes me smile, hauls my kids or a couple friends & golf bags, and still can keep up with some fast sports cars at track events. It really is a TRUE M car. those who say it's not are stuck in the past, sorry haters

that being said I would never fault anyone for choosing either of these other cars... they're all great but in different ways. it really comes down to preference.

To the OP:

Well first off, welcome to Bimmerpost! I'm a relative new-comer myself, having purchased my first-ever BMW just last May.

As to the M235i's position in the market, I think you made valid points. It's been hammered to death on multiple BMW forums that the M235i is not a full blown M car. I think it is very obvious that BMW aimed the car midway between the more ordinary, good-performing sedans and the all-out, bone-jarring (and more expensive) M-cars. BMW hit the mark as far as I'm concerned. So after almost 4 months of blissful ownership, I don't feel much compelled to defend the M235i position in the lineup. I think it is right where it belongs - not an everyday sedan and not a full M car. It's a good, solid, happy medium that you can comfortably drive all day and still get a good boot in the pants when you want it.

A perfect post from someone with experience behind the wheel of various bmw's and M cars! The M sport 228i with a manual option and track pack is what Id rock! The M235i felt good when i drove it but it felt like it could lose some fat. The 228i just feels good, it felt really agile and fun. I asked my wife if she wanted to order the m235....she chose the 228 Msport (still awaiting deli very).

Secondly, sorry, the reason why the M3 is so popular is because there isn't anything that can touch it in the price range. Sure, there are better "sports cars" in that price range but they all lack the daily usability of the M3. The M3 is still the car that can do it all during the week and still handle the track on the weekend.

But I do see the ///Marketing is working quite well.
I couldn't agree more. For the money the F80 M3 is the BEST looking car out there and one hella fast machine. These rear fenders that arch out is just pure ! Momday-Friday pick up your kids from school, have good fun. Saturday wake up drink my coffee hit the track, rip up some tarmac and go back home feeling like a pro .

I don't understand how many folks are down on or bash the F80/82 for its size when it lost so much weight, and all I read on the expert reviews how this is the 1st stock M car that survives hot lap after hot lap, and even the steel brakes take the beating unlike the E9x (that melt). Clearly this car was engineered with performance and it DELIVERS that which most cars can't at a base MSRP of $62,000! What the fuck more do people want?

And if you play your cards right find the right dealer you can talk your way into getting 5-6% off MSRP, add Euro deliver at -7% you can get this car with a few light options in the mid 50's!

Please, please someone show me another car more capable with everyday duties that looks better, weighs less then 3500lbs at the similar or same price point.

Sure I love a Porsche as much as the next guy. My dream car is a 911. But it can't do everything I need...my heart tells me go for it, buy all pure logic and soul tells me the the letter M is what I need...I'll leave it at that. I just wish more people would appreciate how well the F80 was thought out and engineered. Maybe im reading between the lines to much or somethinng....

I think I slightly threw him under the bus because I made fun of what he calls his 'life choice' that I disapprove of and I've known him since we were 6 years old. I spoke to him yesterday actually. he's happy living at home.... Even prefers it. Brings food to work and spend money at bars and night clubs like me. And I go out a lot and have paid probably an average of $1000 a month in rent since college (we've been out of college for 11 years.... So I guess I've paid a Porsche gt3 worth in rent and he hasn't...). But he does seem happy with his choices and will be buying an m car or a z06 and I wont be. I guess I don't care about cars that much and he does. And it'll be a happier outcome for him. A lot of people think he's a little odd but he's happy being his odd self. Im guessing there's not too many people like him but I'm sure hell definitely be happy paying cash for an f80 with as he's noted full leather and contrast stitching onthe stering wheel that you can't get on other bimmers

underwheeled looking, the M235i is a nice car in person, pics don't do it justice. Imagine what the M2 will be like once it's out (or 2M?).
