M240i Spark Plug service interval

I have a 2018 M240i with 33k km ( 20k miles) and a service message for spark plugs replacement just came on. I'm assuming this is due to hitting 6 years since in service date. Is this necessary given the low mileage and that the car seems to be running fine? Any risks?

Thanks

That one I am not sure about. Spark plugs do not really age except with use. 20k miles is really nothing on modern plugs, so this makes me think you have an issue that needs to be checked out. If the ECU detects something amiss it will throw a code/DTC, in this case something with the plugs. I would pull the plugs and check to be sure one is not fouled or damaged.

Wait until at least 30k. Ours were replaced under BMW's free maintenance at just under 40k.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'm at just under 24K and am 72 days away from my 6-year in-service date.

Because I frequently go weeks and sometimes months between driving the car, I'm placing a note in it to remind me to look at the dash for the relevant message

No problem. Do you think I'm getting the message based on time or because the system is picking up worn spark plugs?

I think Shirazkhan is correct, as the Maintenance booklet that came with my car specifies that they be changed at:

"Every 6th engine oil service (approx. 60,000 mi)"

I had my 6th oil change at 12,760 miles and received no notice from the car to change the plugs. Maybe the car isn't as smart as it thinks it is?

Mileage is low,and if the car is standard the original plugs lasts long.If there was an issue with the car like a misfire, then you would get an eml or drivetrain error, not a reminder to replace plugs. If car is out plan and you can afford replacing them then go ahead.

This is what I assumed as well thank you. I'll check for gap/wear and decide from there.

Side note, the reminder (along with the micro filter reminder) is now gone on both the app and notifications in the car...

I changed the plugs at 50K and installed BMW OEM. There is no reason to do before 60K unless you don't use Premium gas. I suggest you replace your cabin filter and check you engine air filter. Of course, have a brake flush done.
