What am I hearing
Hi folks
I tolk delivery of a brand new M240i on Friday last week and thought I should say "hi" to everyone since your discussions were very helpful in shaping my order (went for Alpine white, grey wheels, HK audio, sun protection glass, heated front seats, adaptive suspension, auto box and the M Performance LSD). I am now doing my very best to drive it carefully, keep under 4,500 revs, etc for the first 1,200 miles. So I do my miles mostly on our UK motorway, with the limiter set to 75mph on EcoPro. At less than 2,000 revs, I don't hear the engine at all but I do hear a low pitched rumble. It sounds very much like the range extender engine in my wife's BMW i3. Any ideas as to what I'm hearing please? Best Nick |

There is an electric coolant pump for the turbo cooling circuit on the B58. I cannot hear it from inside the car though.
Although it does vary with engine RPM, the fake engine noise (ASD) piped through the speakers makes a drone at low RPM, you may be hearing that. I was very happy to delete that crap. |

Like someone said, probably the coolant pump. Also, keep in mind, during break in - you're not supposed to completely baby it. You want to modulate between light to moderate to aggressive. The point is to get the power train used to various thermal expansion and contraction points. You don't want to be banging off the rev limiter during break in but exceeding 4K here and there when fully warmed up is actually a good idea.

Have the dealership verify alignment specs. I was hearing a sort of machine-rumble that went away once they reset me to stock specs (but not before it ate a set of tires - ouch). You may want them to also check headlight alignment if they don't seem just right, as that is another thing commonly missed (or set wrong) in new car prep.
And for break in, don't use cruise control much. Staying at one set rpm is highly discouraged. For a while you are best off being 'that guy' who varies speed 5-10mph (but for a good reason, not b/c you are brain damaged like those who regularly drive this way). Also recommended to get some mod-acceleration and some deceleration, just not full WOT, especially at lower revs. |

Can you explain the reasoning behind that statement. Every performance vehicle I ever owned was driven cautiously until break in period was over. I owned 2 S2000's with a RPM limit of 9K. I knew of owners who also owned them and blew their engines by driving them hard from day 1. ??

I went with the Technic harness as I may later upgrade my amp and also I don't own a coding tool so if the dealer re-flashed I'd have to either borrow the tool again or buy one. Very easy install as documented by Zooks in another thread.
