Floored my 2er when it's cold... How bad is it?

I accidentally floored my car to about 5000 rpm when the engine is cold, the engine oil temperature reading after that shows about 33 degree celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit)

Anyway, is this really bad for the engine? I know it's bad but how bad is it?

FYI I did not drive my car into a lake before...

wait till the car is fully warm before getting on it.

A few times wont hurt anything, but you should really let it come up to temp.

Just remember: hot oil and cold water don't mix. Or vice versa.

How long did the 5000 RPM last? Was the engine under load? Or, was this just a brief blip while sitting in the driveway?

It is bad for the engine if you do it all the time, but one time won't hurt it. The oil level monitoring system in idrive has to see 160* Fahrenheit,in my experience, before it will function so I think that is the minimum operating temperature for "enthusiastic" driving.Personally, I like to see 175* F or more before I lean on the engine.

I believe the manual on my car said once the temp gauge is off the peg you can start getting on it. I could be wrong about that tho.

That happened on the road at 1st and 2nd gear for about 5 seconds. And yes the engine was under load because it was pedal to the metal

180 degrees is the temp you want for oil before running the motor hard. On a 60 degree day and stone cold motor, it takes about 10 minutes of driving to get the oil up to temp. On a 40 degree day it's closer to 15 minutes. On an 80-90 degree day, it's about 5 minutes. This is all from data logging via my Torque app.

Coolant warms up much faster than oil, BUT it's oil temp that you should focus on. Period.

OP - What you did didn't hurt the motor, but don't make a practice out of it. Try and keep the rpms below 4000rpms and stay out if much boost until the oil is up to temp. Heavy load like flooring it in 4th or higher gears from 3000rpms or lower on cold oil is bad news bears.

What's the app you are using? Is it available for iOS? How do I connect it to my car? Thanks

There's a sticky thread in the Nav/electronics forum. I wrote step-by-step instructions for setting up an iOS device with the Dash Command app. I included screenshots from an iPod Touch showing the oil and coolant temp gauges. Plenty of other folks contributed tips and instructions as well, including Android and alternate iOS solutions.

it will not hurt your engine as long as it's not frequent.
you would be surprised how the engine manufacturer tests their engine.
(i.e. start at -20 C and floor it..)

BTW, are you sure it was about 5 sec? that's long time. If you were in 2nd gear, it would be close to 50~55 mph and hitting rev limiter.
I bet it was less.

Anyway,no need to worry. it's not an issue.
If you do it every day, then it will wear the engine internal prematurely.

The flood of new usernames to replace the ones that quickly sunk didn't help matters either...

Yeah. Either everyone in Canada is an idiot or something smells fishy. Beyond his flooded engine smelling fishy, I mean.

I figured that out after you questioned the recommended temp (a question which displays some semblance of intelligence). Besides, your first question wasn't quite as egregious as the other guy. He would have asked how long can you drive around at the rev limiter before shifting into 2nd gear while the engine is cold.

As for your question, I red-lined my car early one morning about 2 miles from my house on the 3rd day I had the car (pushed the lever in the wrong direction; my Prelude worked the opposite of this car). 23k+ miles later, I've seen no issues.
