Last weekend I had them all rebalanced. They said 3 of them were slightly off. But the rebalance didn't make any difference. So now, I'm thinking to move the replacement tire to the back. If the vibration goes away, then it's that tire. If the vibration remains, it must be the wheels. But then what? Do I go back to the stock wheels? Order a different set of wheels? |

If you haven't had them road force balanced, try that - much better outcome if static or dynamic balancing proves ineffective. https://www.hunter.com/find-equipment/

I had exactly the same issue at the same speeds, had the wheels (tires only a few months old) balanced but not much better, I have noticed it has pretty much gone now after 12 months so who knows what it is?!

Yes, mine seems to have gotten better with some mileage this week. It seems very strange to me. I have the Bridgestone Driveguard Plus RFTs and when first put on my stock wheels they were, perhaps, the smoothest tires I've ever had. Then the new wheels and the high speed vibration. But now they are back to being very smooth again. I drive 32 miles each way to work and back, so I pile on the miles fairly quickly. Thanks for your post because I was starting to question my sanity.

Well, I thought it was getting better, until I hit a stretch of freeway I rarely drive. It was pretty bad there when I got to a bit over 80. Very frustrating.

Hi, I'm new to the board but not new to BMW's and their history of strange vibrations passed down through the generations. E34's at 60-70 MPH will vibrate unless everything spinning is perfect.
My 2017 M240I auto has a vibration at similar speeds mentioned in this thread. Starts around 65, peaks at 80, and then dissipates as speed increases. I don't believe my vibration is tire/wheel related as it has happened with multiple wheel and tire combinations. It is felt through the seat as well as any surface touched (wheel, console, shifter). It is more of a hum then a typical wheel/tire /worn bushing shake (its a much higher frequency). The condition has been present and consistent for roughly 25K miles. Car now has 115K. The condition is subtle enough that its only annoying when I'm not preoccupied with what's on the radio or dodging potholes on I96..... and yes my wheels are straight. I'm doing some spring maintenance and will pull the driveshaft to inspect the center support bearing and guibo. I might have the driveshaft checked and balanced as well Hopefully this will shed some light on this problem. |

My 228 has had this since I purchased it ~45k miles ago. It has been essentially impossible to track down so I've given up. It's just how the car is, in my mind.

Anecdotal but I've noticed it could be something external like the road surface. I swear there is a crew out there that has a wobbly asphalt machine.

In my case, it turned out to be the balancing of the wheels. I got frustrated with it so I had Discount Tire pull the aftermarket wheels and put my stock ones back on. Still had the freakin vibration. So I brought it to my regular mechanics, an indie BMW/Audi shop called Orr Autosport. They looked the car over and found DT hadn't put any weights at all on the front wheels. Orr road force balanced my wheels and boom, vibration is gone. Longer story than I'm telling here, but my long term relationship with DT has come to an end.

The name Discount Tire says it all: we should discount everything that they say they do, since, in this case at least, they did not do it.
If you find a good indie, stick with them. I was thinking just the other day that one reason why I plan to keep my 2015 235 until at least one of us is no longer roadworthy is that we have a mechanic that we trust who is very knowledgeable about the car. Priceless! |
