Brand new car mpg?

I got my 230i xDrive(B46) a week ago.
But...only got 18.8mpg on trip computer...(mostly city)
Is this usual on brand new car?
Do you guys think mpg will be better?
Any experience?

Mog? Is that, like, some sort of hybrid that's halfway between a magazine and a blog?

Your mpg is pretty typical to mine, but some seem to get much better (and I think it improves a little after break in). My 228 tends to top out at about 30mpg highway, but it really loves the mountain driving for some reason - best mpg I ever get is on my fun runs, where I can get up into the low-mid 30's. I really never use eco mode, but that is supposed to add about 5% (1.5-2mpg).

No idea on city driving as most of mine is rural or highway. But highway is during rush house so I get stuck in stop and go traffic.

I've been averaging 28-31 mpg.. now that I'm at 3000 miles, I'm averaging 29-32 mpg, so it's getting better, even though my foots gotten a tad bit heavier.

Thanks, guys.
I hope it gets better...
It is lower than I expected.
Do you think poor mpg is only because of break-in?
Any other experience?

Sometimes you have too much fun and your driving may differ than normal when you adapt to the new car. a.k.a. Fun Mode. I didn't know I was doing it until my girlfriend told me how I drove different.

Was probably my mind having waaayy too much fun taking turns and checking acceleration/engine noise.

But that could have been just me.

different car (M240 xdrive convertible) but my average mpg is slowly creeping up from 21-22 when new to 22-23 after 1k miles to no 24 close to 2k. Suburban commute .... how the trend will continue.

I put the first 8k miles on my 240 with a long distance high speed commute. I averaged around 31mpg. Now living in town, 5 miles to work, I'm running around 23.

You've gotta be worse than Grandma.. 2500 rpms to get to speed would take a bit of time.. When I was in break in, I tried to keep it under 3000 rpms for merging into traffic, but eventually settled at 4000 rpms max. You're only there for a second or so, so it's not a big deal.

When I had just over 800 miles on it, I started taking it to 5000 rpms.. by the time I hit 1000 miles, I was periodically take it to 6000 rpms.. These days with about 3000 miles, I gun it to get to speed... gun it for passing and gun it just for fun at times. Hahahahaha

My M235i gets pretty terribly mileage, low 20s for sure. It's in the low teens when I romp away on it. Maybe I'm more aggressive than most?

Curious what your averaging for speed to get those mpg #'s (that cumulative one)? Mine is a DD so with the commuting and city driving I'm at about 27mph/22mpg lifetime.

Then why didn't you buy a Prius I bought mine to drive like it was meant to be driven. Sport/Sport+ for me. Comfort for the wife. Never Eco. Gas mileage is no issue for me especially at todays prices. I like having fun.

I was just curious about other bimmer's case. Haha

Well, there is something to be said about owning a BMW for fuel economy purposes.

The lifetime MPG on my 2015 M235x automatic is 21.3 after 25000 miles.
My 325 with a five-speed manual had a lifetime mpg of 24.5 after 160000 miles over more or less the same roads. If anything, I do less highway driving now.
Considering the difference in performance, I think this car does fine. Especially at current fuel prices, I have no complaints.

True, for some folks it is important. I remember the ads for the Honda S2000. Drive it like you just stole it. I owned 2.

MPG correlates very closely to average speed. The higher, the higher. (Up to a point.)

City mpg is pretty bad in any car. I usually average around 14-15 since 90% of my driving is city. Averaged 25ish coming home from vegas yesterday and I made it back just under 3 hours (which is amazing mpg, considering the speed).

So the BMW M3 is going to be driven daily at the boring snail pace in the video right. I don't think so.

Ok.. so I was running low on my way home, so I filled up at a station I often stop at... This time, I filled up with 89 octane gas to see how my mpg would be and I'm a bit shocked.

This drive from this station to my home is about 25 miles with a good mixture of flat, and hills.. I usually am at 32 mpg by the time I get home.. But this time, get this.. I was showing 38 on the lie-o-meter... It was up to 42mpg until I hit the big hill about a mile from my home... usually I'm at about 36 mpg on 93 octane gas when I get there.

How nutz if that? I wonder if I got a more efficient burn on the gas because of the lower octane... You know because timing wasn't retarded since there was no knocking, but fuel burned better because it would ignite at a lower temp with the lower octane..

No idea why it was so much better, but I'm going to have to do it again to see if it's repeatable, or if it was just a fluke.
