1. Don't leave anything visible in your car
2. Don't have anything in your car that you are not prepared to loose 3. Don't put things in your trunk and walk away, put them in there before you go These don't help with car thieves but they will help with smash and grab attacks |

Modern BMW's are kind of tough for the low-tier thieves, in my opinion.
Too much technology unless they tow it (and even then it would be tracked). Probably easy for wheels but that's about it. As long as you don't leave a laptop bag visible in the car they won't randomly come break your windows. |

Aerostar is right, but what this means is that most car theft nowadays is done via carjacking. Keep an eye on your surroundings, and be ready to just give it up (or there is that CCW option...). Even though I know no car is worth getting shot over, I'd probably have a 50-50 chance of doing s/t stupid as a first response (more WTF/F-you than some Charles Bronson type heroism, but it'd probably still get me shot).

Car theft has declined by at least half in the last 25 years nationally. In some areas, such as New York City, it is 5% of what it was in the 1980's. Modern cars are just very hard to steal or break into.
I suggest worrying about something else. |
