I'd put in a vote for the Conti Wintersports - I picked these b/c they had slight advantage for braking/handling vs. Blizzaks on the testing, but haven't really tried them head-to-head against others (I suspect that differences amongst Blizzak, X-ice, and Contis are trivial). Use them on both my car and wife's, very happy with them overall. I've also heard great things about the Hakkepalitas (or however they spell it) - they didn't have them available when I was shopping or I'd have tried a set.
And seconding other suggestions to go with a 17" square setup. I don't have sport brakes, and the Sparco pro Corsa wheels work well for me (DK if they clear the big brakes, so check). |

It's hard to find 17 that fit the M sports brakes...
Also for me blizzak is the right choice cause winter is never under 0 degree so its always cold and it won't wear the tires up |

This compares your original 225/40-18 front wheel/tire assembly to your proposed size.
http://www.1010tires.com/Tools/Tire-...0R18/215-50R18 Once above 3%, there is a risk of the brakes not functioning properly as the wheel speed has changed too much. You were concerned about speedo and odometer accuracy. This will cause a larger discrepancy. Once more, there are plenty of 17" wheels which fit over MSport brakes.

The overall diameter would be reduced with a lower aspect ratio which lowers the sidewall, which is what the original size offers. But, if your area develops potholes in the winter, this is going the wrong way. You want MORE sidewall, which means you need a smaller wheel again. Also, I think it's unlikely you will find narrow winter tires in that 18" size, but you may want to look further. More important to be narrow (215 or 205) in your environment than to have 18".

Either those or 205/50-17, depending on model availability and load rating. Either of those sizes in a dedicated winter tire such as WS80 will give you extremely good traction and snow/ice capability and provide better pothole protection against a bent rim.

I'm running for winter 225/40R18 and 255/35R18 Bridgestone Blizzak WS80. I mounted them on the staggered 436 rims.

Long Island is not Montreal. I have lived in both. Even on Long Island, I run 17" rims in the winter. In Montreal, where potholes are the size of the craters on the moon and there is much more snow for much longer, I would run 16" rims if they fit over the M brakes.
But what really piques my curiosity is why OP is looking for a winter setup now. Come on, even in Montreal it doesn't snow in June. |

I would proceed with caution with this setup in winter...watch out for the rear end suddenly being in front! Did someone advise you to get such a wide rear and staggered set for winter?

If you want to go 225, best to do it square.

Based on our experience with the X5, I might try the 255's on the rear axle of the M235 when the PA4's (square setup) we currently have need replacing. I think the staggered tires look better with the staggered wheels. |

If you want "Winter" tires, go 205/50-17... If you need All Seasons because it snows now and then, get 225/45-17. What you're looking for is diameter, which is 25 inches, that fit on 17 inch wheels that will work with the M brakes.
BTW, if you went with 215/45-17 you might notice a slight increase in performance because you've reduced your tire diameter. 215/50-17 might cause a slight decrease in performance because now the diameter has gotten a bit bigger. To keep the same performance get a tire that's 25 inches in diameter. Anything bigger or smaller, depending on degree, will have an effect like you've changed out your diff gears. It might not be noticeable, but it can.
