I have an M240i in production right now. Dealer must have checked with me 3-4 times over the last few months to confirm I wanted the lighter color wheels, apparently a lot of people get them mixed and assume they're getting the lighter one when in fact the darker one is standard. I wonder if that's why they changed it to the lighter color being standard on the 2018 ordering guide.

I kind of agree about the negative comments on the dark wheels (which I also have.) I would have preferred the ferric gray on the car (Estoril). But I bought off the lot.
I have a feeling that black wheels are a fad. But, they do hide brake dust for sure.

Keep the Orbit Grey. Tell them you will save them from the hassle of having to swap to the wheels you ordered if they give you the M-Performance CF mirror caps.

As for the wheels, I have the 436M wheels (lighter color with MPSS's). However, due to all the brake dust, they appear just as dark as the orbit grey wheels a day after washing the car. Don't sweat it!

I park next to a black m235 with black wheels at work. The entire car looks cheaper and has absolutely no body line pop in comparison to my MW M235. When I've got my silver OEM rims on, they look MUCH bigger. My car also looks a bit lower though both are riding on stock springs. At a distance, the black M235 looks really really bland. Even the owner tells me black on black was the wrong choice after seeing the differences.

You still notice brake dust on the Orbits...the shiny black turns dull and skanky. Ceramic pads do wonders to minimize dust....I've got a set on my E46 and they're amazing; I can go for weeks before the wheels get dirty, and they're bright silver. The ceramics do require a little more pedal pressure, and they're certainly not for the track, but everything's a tradeoff. Super quiet too. Orbits might make more sense if you have the blacked-out grilles, but I love the chrome edging around them. The black-outs look like a high-schooler took a rattle can to them. There's a discontinuity with the all-black kidneys and the chrome elements of the headlight clusters too. I'll probably change one thing on mine...some EB II mirror covers instead of silver. I love how this shot shows off the character lines of the car: Last edited by rightrudder; 06-15-2017 at 12:36 AM.. |

Congratulations on your new car! I'm new to the forum and preordering a 2018 240 soon. The price looks very good to me. I am buying my first car. Would you mind sharing tips on how to get an offer like that? Did you just negotiate from msrp? Thanks!

I think the wheel color is just one of those personal differences, no real 'truth' for what is right or wrong. I get a lot of compliments on my flat black winter wheels (Sparco Pro Corsas), but obviously others hate that look. We could probably also add in the colored wheel fans for a real 3-way throw down.
But WTF were they thinking with those silver mirror caps? I can't see that as anything but a replacement piece that hasn't yet been color matched. Perhaps just a clever move to sell a ton of carbon aftermarket caps? |

When I ordered my M240 convertible I asked teh dealer if the car he offered me had A/S > they said yes (was not concerned about rim color) when I picked it up they turned out to be MPSS ..... I told him it was a problem .... a little back and forth and they gave me $500 off and all weather floor mats

Isn't it annoying? I am not sure what type of pads they put on these cars...but I am planning on swapping out some different pads that hopefully will have lower dust.

Wow, didn't realize there was so much hate for the Orbit Grey wheels. I don't think they work with the blacked-out grille because I think they ruin the balance and the chrome bits/lights lose out, but otherwise I love how they blur the lines between tire and wheel without being completely black.
I also feel like they're necessary with the Spiderman combo (which also gets hate), because otherwise there's too much going on. |

Love my orbit grey wheels, get tons of compliments, they're definitely attention grabbing; I frequently notice people's eyes drawn to them when Im sitting in traffic. Looks best with the black kidney grills and body colored or carbon fiber side mirror caps, gives it a clean aggressive look. Everyone asks me if they're aftermarket wheels, I guess people expect more boring wheels from BMW...
