Question What's wrong with the name M235i?

I picked up my M235i over the weekend. Absolutely love it. Now, I've really only gotten two comments about it.

1. Is that an M3?
2. That isn't a real M. Take those badges off.

Pretty polarizing comments. I figured I'd ask, what's wrong with the name M235i? I don't really see the fuss about it, and I've left some justification below.

1. Its got more horsepower and torque than the 335i/435i/535i.
2. The M Performance cars have been around for a long time. (read: M635 CSi, M525i, M535d, M135i.)
3. Calling it a 235is doesn't have as much caché as using the M logo. If it attracts more buyers, then BMW will keep building these types of cars. Great.

What do you think? Anything wrong with the name?

Nothing wrong with the name.

M purists just like to bitch about anything they can as if something were stopping them from buying an E36 M3 and leaving the rest of us to keep the company afloat by actually buying new cars. As if the E36 M3 recreated today would actually sell well enough to justify development costs.

People are stupid. The end.

Agreed with above. Goodnight, some people think they are the purveyors of purity, when much of it is simple jealousy or insecurity. We all know it is what it is...and it looks like an M2 is in the future. I have kept it as it was built--and am rather proud of its current nomenclature.

By no means should we try to make it more than it is...nor should we reduce it to less than it is intended.

There's nothing wrong with the name, just like there's nothing wrong with an Audi S3, S4, S5, etc. People here just don't know what it is as they do in Europe, they're ignorant and insecure.

I also think people are jealous that the M235i kicks butt at a cheaper price and the 2 series is a better feel than the 3 series in particular

I wouldn't trade my M235i in for an M4 and that is coming from a previous M3 owner.

I am not sure most of you understand, that the 2-series is nothing other than a newly designed 1-Series.

That in 2014, BMW went with a new floor plan, naming all the coupes evens (2, 4 & 6 series), & all sedans as odds (3, 5 & 7-Series). While doing this, they also felt to leverage the M Spirit into their marketing, to get newcomers to buy into the marketing.

Nothing wrong with any of that, just understand that to most see the M235i as a 235is. Same car, just not as emotional without the M-hype. Mxxx are not any more M than any other car, just using Marketing for add-in options, to fuel bmw's aftermarket.

BMW is's use to come with LSD, any real M car would.. So what is a m235i and why does a $44k racing BMW not have a LSD standard, but highly market one for an additional $3,300. (A: Marketing)

I don't see anything wrong with bmw's new naming, as long as it universal. But I don't see BMW racing any 2-series.. let alone M-Division racing in any new cars.

My 335is did not have an LSD. It did have M-Sport cosmetic pieces. I think tw3rkn was referring to older models, like the 325is, perhaps.

I don't even think my M3 had a LSD. And most people know that the 2 series is the US 1 series replacement.

And BMWs naming is nothing but confusing with a 4 series grand coupe and a 6 series grand coupe. Here are two examples of "2" door cars with 4 doors.

This is solely to compete with Audi

228i = A3
M235i=S3
M2=RS3

M235i is slathered with M badges, too ,uch cosmetic and not enough M to really deserve this, would have personally preferred 235is. Already took off side badges, but the BMWCCA Club convinced me to leave back badge on the car.

With regard to the m performance automobile it has been notice that it's bmw's attempt to take the "is" designation to the next level. wtf is wrong with that.

It's a sensational car only downplayed by people for what it doesn't have. No one thinks what it does has isn't bloody brilliant. Hell in my city it's more exclusive than any m car. There are more m4's in town than 235's.

I agree. My dealer has M3s and M4s in stock but hasn't had an M235i in over a month.

There's nothing wrong with the name. The only issue that's even relevant is the misinformation surrounding that little badge. If everyone understood that it's closer in concept to a 235i with a body kit and some miscellaneous tweaks rather than some 1M successor, all would be good. Much like how people think the Audi S models feature more bespoke differences from their A-line siblings compared to BMWs 28i/35i/50i offerings, when it's really just a bunch of marketing hoo-haa and they're all similar in offering.

It's a less convoluted way of having an 'XXXis' lineup, to put it simply.

It's not really a 235is cos it means there's an existing 235i?

It really is just a 235i, a 135i replacement.

I think BMW miss a beat here cos as just 235i, the marketing noise would be focused on a fabulous non-m car, one of the best. As M235i, there's more negativity surrounding it not being a real M car, lack of LSD etc etc

Someone said it best earlier, let's not overplay the M bit but also not underplay the fact that it's a great little not so M car.
