Definitely outside, when I rev the engine in sport mode it pops and burbles on lift off. In comfort mode it doesn't. I sure hope that burble is not artificial, and is being piped into the cabin!

You may be surprised just how much of the sport mode sound is part of the ASD system. No joke, stand outside your car and listen as a friend revs the engine for you.

With the top down it is almost like being outside the car. |

In my car there is a big difference in when the windows are open and closed. Stock exhaust. Pretty sure the pops and farts etc are real. Some of the sounds I'm not convinced the sound system is capable of making.
I assume ASD does not take window and sunroof position into account? Otherwise BMW put WAY to much effort into this haha. |

Our vehicles are very well insulated with sound deadening material, this may be part of the reason for the ASD. |

Just the JB4. With the latest firmware, you can toggle between stock and always open using the 'talk' button on the steering wheel. You can also change it manually by changing cps1500 setting to 0 or 1.
