Nothing yet. He's still talking to Dinan. Based on the last email exchange with BMW, I'm not worried. I'll update when I have something which will be of value to the members. For now, still being looked at.

Ultimately, on a scale of 1 - 10, this is a 2 for me. I have bigger issues to manage than this. Right now, the car is performing quite nicely (whatever the HP/TQ gains are in the real world) and I'm happy with what I have. The error message I got will be sorted at some point.

First things first; while it's only been a week, the message has not reappeared and I've been driving the car quite hard (and thoroughly enjoying it). I know Luminous said it would reappear after weeks at a time, but so far nothing.

Re: BMW dealership & BMW Canada. The tech from the dealer stayed in touch with me via email almost ever day this past week, keeping me in the loop as to what he'd doing etc, even one evening emailing me around 9p. I was privy to a conf call on Wednesday p.m. between the tech and BMW Canada in Richmond Hill. Admittedly, most of the conversation was of a technical nature. In any case, BMW Canada will be chatting with Germany at some point to discuss further.

While there's no answer on the p1284 message (cause etc), I was assured there's no significant issue at play here. Frankly, I doubt I'll see the message again, which was their opinion as well. In any event, I'm heading out for a couple of weeks vacation and BMW Canada said they would contact me after the 10th, with or w/o a final analysis.

At this stage, given the car is performing quite nicely and as expected, I could care less if the message returned or not. As far as I'm concerned, I've been very well taken care of by the dealer, BMW Canada as well as Dinan.

While I fully respect everyone's opinions on this particular subject, I'm not going to get drawn in any further discussing the merits or lack thereof of this tune or any other tune, nor am I willing to be drawn into further discussions about how I may have gotten ripped off (lower than posted HP/TQ stats etc), screwed, mistreated, lied to etc.

Thanks for reading. Happy motoring everyone
Best
Dave

Thanks Luminous; don't misunderstand me. I thought your post was valuable and in fact, I think your post caught the attention of Dinan (possibly), which in turn opened the communication path between them, the dealer and eventually BMW Canada.

So...thanks.

It's my pleasure, I'm just glad to hear that they are taking care of you. My intention wasn't to make you feel bad about your purchase but rather to prevent someone else from going through what I did with zero help from Dinan or my local dealership. All that matters is that you're happy and satisfied!

Either way I have never seen it after that one time
Just curious how you like your stage 1 ? Is it a noticeable improvement over stock performance and do you recommend getting it ?

My car experienced this the day I took it home from the dealer. Long story short it went away several months later I had my dinan s1 installed and zero issues. The issue did come back in the winter. My car does not like to be put in "D" drive until it is warmed up. When the error surfaced I would simply shut the car off... turn it back on, let it warm up and then the error would go away. I honestly do not think this is a Dinan issue. My car was doing this the day I got home from the dealer prior to my s1 install.

Was it the P1284 fault code?

I'd have to call the dealer to see what the code was. This was over 1 year ago. I'll see if I can get it.

Just back from the cottage after a couple of weeks. 1,200kms there & back and no CEL's, having pushed the car quite hard.

One thing though that was unexpected; I've made this trip twice before the stage 1 install and my HWY & City mileage was (roughly) 10km/l highway and roughly 12km/l or thereabouts for city.

After the installation, I averaged around 8.1km/l hwy and just a hair over 10km/l city.

Do all tunes affect mileage (positively) like this? I read the Racechip does supposedly improve by 1km/l, but curious if other tunes do this? Also, if someone more knowledgeable could explain why mileage improved?

Thx
Dave

@bmwz4 isn't that less? More boost to me means more fuel so I'm not sure how better fuel Eco will come out of a tune.

Exactly my point! More boost, more fuel, but I got an improvement in mileage!?? Definitely counter-intuitive. And I wasn't in EcoPro mode either. Sport and averaging around 125km/h as I usually do.

Bizarre. I can't explain it.

Yeah, hilarious. I guess I didn't articulate this correctly.

I used roughly 8l per 100km, in Sport, 125kmh. Previously, in Sport/125km hr I used 10l+ per km.

Are you suggesting that 8l per 100km is MORE than 10 l per 100km?

According to my calcs, 8.1 litres/100km is 29mpg (US) and 10 litres/100 km is 23.5 mpg US.

From what I understand this effect is achieved by altering the way the car shifts gears. There was a video somewhere on YouTube where they interview a Racechip tech and he explains it pretty well.

well .... 8.1 l/100 km ≠ 8.1 km/l

8.1 l/100k > 10 l/100k.... as in the first place you use less fuel to traverse the same distance
