I always do better selling privately. It's definitely a PITA, but has never taken very long. You just have to price it right. My E91 sold two days after I listed it--to an out-of-state buyer. Don't overlook BMWCCA classifieds; that's where my speedy buyer came from. He knew exactly what he was looking for and my car fit the bill.

Otherwise, Autotrader as worked for me in the past (you do get some junk calls from that.) Cargurus. And neighborhood list serves.

It's double unless you start paying them to remove stuff then they charge way more. Just helped cousin get a GT4 ask me how I know.

Hell of a business model though - here take this. Wait you don't want everything? Ok that'll be another 200% service fee to not install it to begin with.

Very interested to hear impressions on the 718 once you pass the break in period. It's on my short list for cars after the M235i lease is up. It's essentially down to the 718 or M2.

^ This is why I will never buy a new one of those. Along with ridiculous cost of options. You want a Cayman with the same performance that got your attention from the reviews? That will be cost you > $5k in options. Want dual zone climate, nav, and proximity entry - (features that should be standard on this car btw)? That will be > $3k. Full leather for $2.5k. $2k for nice wheels. $$$$ for a larger gas tank?!?!

Figure $12-$15k in options easy just for basic stuff.

And a significant amount of time to go through all the options. A la carte is nice but only to a point. P-cars are funny using the older Cayman as an example since the really high end stuff is still around, using round numbers it was like $60K then engine upgrade $70K then options $85K (and 6 hours of time to spec) then you start working the other way and pulling stuff off and $100K+ gets you into the lightweight racing style.

Truth be told finding a dealer you can trust helps with everything (aside from the $). My father and I spent countless hours spec-ing out his Macan then he started fresh at dealer and was done in 15 minutes. With some basic questions and a decent understanding of what's good value and helpful to a specific customer for his goals, they can easily help guide you. I found it to be a much more consultative process vs BMW.

It's funny how many of us have / had a Boxster or Cayman on our shot list with the 2 Series for initial purchase or replacement of our 2 Series. I'm guessing like me, many of us prefer the P car but migrated towards the 2er for budgetary reasons, which isn't to say we're cheap, but rather we recognized the tremendous bang for the buck the 2er is, even though our hearts lust for the P car.

I beg to differ somewhat. Piecemeal options allow you to outfit your car exactly how you want with no fluff, and I'm willing to pay a little extra for that kind of choice in a custom-ordered car. For instance, I did not want keyless entry: it's a proven security risk. So I didn't order it. I also did not want Nav on this car since it's an overpriced option and a lower infotainment option tier with Apple CarPlay is available. So I didn't order Nav.

On the other side of the coin, I did not want any chrome on the car anywhere. So I paid extra to have the headlight washer nubs and model logo painted body color, and the exhaust tips, headlights, and wheels done in black, among other things. Personally, I'm happy to have this option and happy to pay somewhat of a premium for the factory to do it as opposed to my (or some paint shop's) dubious modification skill sets.

And, believe it or not, there are some options that are relative bargains. Leather on this car, for instance, is good quality, covers most of the doors and dash, and is actually lighter than the standard plastic trim pieces (yes, someone's weighed them.) No brainer!

Compare all of that to, say, Honda/Acura or VW/Audi, neither of which allows for custom ordering at all ...

Different biz models, yes. But choice is always the preferred model for a car you want to make your own.

Agree 100% the Porsche model is ideal - just for casual shoppers or those not familiar with the brand all this comes as a bit of a shock. Base price is pretty meaningless, and that's where the griping comes in. There's just work to be done to get a straight price for what you want, not that there's anything wrong with that.

On top of that there are certain things that you can do with the BMW that you cannot with the Boxster / Cayman. It's a bit more versatile of a form factor. Although one thing to point out with the P-Car if you are going to run RWD / winter tire setup the layout of that car will definitely have some benefit vs the BMW.

Agree. When I was shopping back in December, I couldn't fit my hockey bag and sticks or my sailing equipment into the Boxster, which helped tip the scales toward my m235i. At the time I also had an aging BIG Nissan Titan 4x4, but didn't want to rely on having to drive it 2 or 3 times a week for those activities. However, now I have my new Canyon Denali 4x4, which isn't as large, making it easier to drive and park on a regular basis, not to mention it gets 18-26 mpg (almost the same as the m235i) as opposed to 10-13 mpg in the Titan. So the lack of interior and trunk space in a Boxster is no longer an issue for me.

You 100% nailed it. Originally I wanted to the boxster but went with the BMW as I didn't want to stretch the budget and there was a lot of comparative value. As my earnings increase I can re-evaluate but this is exactly the reason. Not to say I don't live the bimmer, but the Porsche is the one that got away.

Nice car, PDK = BAD ))

Always wanted Cayman S but never worked out, and now the older shape looks really dated, and I cant afford new. When did they start making those?

2017; I got one of the first 2018s made. I like the looks of the 981 (2nd gen Cayman), but the 718 is the concept brought to full maturity, IMHO. It's truly a stunning package design-wise.

Bonus: Starting with the 718, most Caymans and Boxsters are now made in the Porsche mother-ship plant in Stuttgart, alongside all the 911s. Most of the previous-gen models were built in Finland.

Some background: This is my dream car. Literally.

As a kid, one of my first Matchbox cars was a 1970 Porsche 910 -- its second mid-engine design after the original 718. A little later, I got one that was an early '70s 911 Carrera ducktail. At the time (I was 7 or 8), I was into building model planes as well as playing with my cars. So I took some model paint and painted those two Porsches midnight blue and silver. The 911 was completely midnight blue. The 910, pictured below, was more two-tone:

I still have both Matchbox cars (though I can't find the 911 ... gah!).

By the time I moved to Germany when I was 11, I was a Porsche freak. The first two books I ever bought were about Porsche (still have those, too) ... and the first semi-exotic car I ever drove was a 911 Targa. At age 13. I basically stole it -- I 'borrowed' the keys from a friend of my dad's while they were on site somewhere -- and had the balls to drive it around the block in first gear. I was scared crapless and absolutely in heaven at the same time -- a really weird feeling I've only replicated truly a few other times in my life. I still remember it like it was yesterday.

Congrats! Awesome car! I had a 1984 944 with sport suspension. Loved the balance and feel of that car.
