Can you trust the car's calculated average L/100km or mpg?

I know that with my Volvo, the car's reported mpg is greater than what I calculate when I use the mileage since my last fill-up divided by the amount of fuel to fill the tank again.

And I'm not totally sure the odometer is 100% accurate. Probably the best method would mileage from a good road map divided by the gas pump reading.

Why yes I did. I drove up on a Friday and came back that Sunday. Spent the weekend golfing. I was mostly keeping up with traffic. I drove straight through on major highways the whole time.

In my experience BMW odometers are pretty accurate (assuming no mods to wheel/tire circumference) even though the speedometer is not.
