Hello Everyone,

Ex VW/Audi owner here. I drive 6,000~8,000 miles per year, mostly daily to work and occasional 1-2 trips out of town. But I want those daily drives from/to work to be fun. That said, I'm looking for a CPO M235i or M240i. I can wait another year but there's a CPO M235i that's caught my eye. Can I ask the BMW vets here some questions please?

2014 M235i (US mkt): 19K miles, CPO, in-service date 9/2014, driving asst/prem/tech/conv pkgs

1. Anything I should look out for with these 2014 models?
2. Do all US mkt M235i/M240i have HIDs headlamps that swivels to follow the turn path of the car?
3. Will adding a JB4 bring a N55 to torque levels of the B58?
4. Since the car will have 1 yr left on original warranty + 2 yrs CPO warranty, do I need any more?

Thanks everyone.

I've had my 2014 for 30k ( total mileage 42k) so far:
1) no issues at all
2) yes they do
3)my jb4 with a bit of ethanol in the tank destroys a stock 240
4)no you'll be fine

Thanks @Questionofthetune! I can't believe I never looked at BMW when I bought the S3 last year.

No problem, the M235 is one of very few I would feel comfortable owning since talking to anyone (owners, service advisers, techs, etc) they are bulletproof. Bmw did a fantastic job creating a well rounded reliable car.

Probably just wishful thinking of a very satisfied owner, but my gut says 10-15 years from now, when discussing 2010-2020 era BMW's, the 2 Series, particularly the m235i / m240i will be the cars BMW lover's rave about. The N55 is proving to be a terrific engine and the B58 appears to be equally as good if not better. Only time will tell.

I'd get the newest M235 you can afford. The 2014 and 2015 M235 had many features that are not standard on the 2016+ cars. I believe that the 2014 cars cannot stream music via BT. Definitely research to make sure that the 2014 comes with everything you want.

As for the JB4, an M235 with the JB4 will make around 10-20whp and 20-30wtq over a stock B58. Mod for mod though, the B58 will always be a bit ahead of N55 until you get to around 400whp when both cars meet their fuel limits. The biggest advantage the B58 has is it's management of intake heat.

This pretty much sums it up. The N55 is a solid power plant. Still loving my 2014 M235i with over 40,000 miles on it

Just sold my 2014 and was able to stream music via BT. Believe the main changes from 2014 were the interior lights on the dash from orange to white, matte to gloss finish on center console, and the M emblems on the side of the car were removed. Any major packages that were missing?

Well it was a good test drive and I confirmed it streams BT with fill info in the iDrive beautifully.

One thing on the CarFax I noticed was while it was one owner returning from 2yr 10mo lease, but the history showed "Vehicle sold at auction." I asked the dealer and he noted that leases are sold at BMW auctions and the dealer buys and CPO the cars. Is this normal for a lease turn in?

They absolutely can and I do in mine everyday, but I coded it in.

I just wanted to thank everyone here for their coments and recommendations. I purchased that 2014 CPO M235i last week. It was an early lease turn in with 16K miles and immaculate condition.

I'm laughing and having so much fun with this car.

Welcome, and on a very practical note that may be of immediate interest - it's suggested for 15/16 models that you top-up the screenwash only with BMW concentrate. Not sure about '14.

There is massive disagreement on forums about whether this is always true, but enough reports of problems to make it worth the extra cost, in my opinion. I calculate you'll pay about $20/year more than if you use cheap gas station / 3rd-party stuff, but since the repair bill can be $450+ it seems worth it. But up to you.

I only mentino because topping-up the screenwash is something you're quite likely to do fairly soon, before you've come across the relevant forum threads on the topic.

Winshield wash fluid causing problems? Well, I definitely wouldn't have known that! Thx for the heads-up. By the way, what exactly is the problem that would cause a $450 fix?

Apparently certain brands of windshield washer fluid (RainX is commonly cited) hoses up the windshield washer fluid level censor. Search this site or F30 forum for washer fluid for details.

Here's the relevant section of my M235i Owners Manual iPhone App:

It seems to refer to two cases, 1. Rain-X type screen clear and 2. any other concentrate. Other feedback 3. relates also to cars in very warm areas where the screenwash is unused for long periods - some evidence that the reservoir acts as a petri-dish for bacteria/algae (this is a much more general issues, not just 2 Series and not just BMW). THis is obviated by emptying your screenwash more often than you otherwise would.

Also, if you have the car serviced by BMW they'll use their Screenwash concentrate to top-up the reservoir. If this causes 'gunking' issues, then it's your problem, as the above instructions are pretty clear. I don't have an issue with this but I do think that BMW dealers should emphasise this more on hand-over.
