And things tend to chain together - seldom is it just one part that needs replacement. Perhaps in the long run it is cheaper to skip these (unless you are the guy who's turbo spits a vane through the top of a piston), but the peace of mind is worth something too.
In my experience on a number of cars things all start to go to hell quickly after factory warranty period. Typically need to dump a bunch of money in then the car is good for another 50-75K. Just put a new rear diff and transfer case in my diesel 3-series at 58K.

On a related topic, for those who drive a ton of miles, I just discovered that Benz you can get up to 3 years CPO unlimited mileage. So for GF who does a ton of miles I am looking at a 2.5 year old car with 26k on it, she'd have 24K miles to drive in a year and a half so as not to mileage out before timing out, then after that 3 years of unlimited miles.

Sorry for going slightly off topic but as we all start thinking about extended warranties and whatnot good info to have.

I linked to the post for you, sounds like it's either Fields BMW of Orlando or Fields BMW of Winter Park:

Platinum does cover Nav, Gold/CPO does not. Other than nav, and standard wear items such as brake pads and wiper blades (which most new car warranties don't cover either), it covers the same stuff as a new car warranty. Granted the m235/m240 are (hopefully) of better quality than the n54 335i, the BMW CPO warranty on my 2007 335i covered about $10k-$15k worth of stuff in two years no questions asked, and I'm probably forgetting a couple of things. All happened between the mileage of between 50k and 80k. I sold the car immediately after the CPO ran out:

- Both turbos replaced
- HPFP replaced
- 2 AC repairs (including new condenser)
- 3 wheel bearings replaced

I used to get BMW extended warranties on my cars, but I started looking at 3rd party extended warranty providers and found a few good ones and when you compare coverages and costs, you can get the same or better coverage (yrs and miles) for 50 - 60% of what BMW charges.
In the U.S., you have even more choice.
Here's a website which highlights the top 15 3rd party providers stateside.

For the platinum warranty they said that it does.

CPO/Gold does not its only drivetrain.

CPO/Gold is definitely NOT only drivetrain. I had things like hub bearings, window regulators, and AC issues covered by it. Basically anything mechanical is covered. It won't cover infotainment items such as the head unit, navi screen, and audio system components. It also won't cover wear and tear items like worn interior trim pieces. If anything, it's closer to new car warranty than drivetrain.

Normally I'd never get an extended warranty, but it seems like cars these days are getting harder to work on. Has anyone seen issues that just couldn't be fixed by an independent shop or issues where the difference between independent and dealer prices are negligible because of the new tech?

Sorry, I misspoke, you are absolutely right, I meant anything mechanical.

The way the dealer described it, gold is pretty much everything outside the cabin, platinum includes the stuff inside as well.

That sounds pretty much spot on.

Just an FYI for folks looking to do this in combination with a lease buy-out or if you are buying a CPO car, if you add the maintenance as well it does drop your interest rate quite a bit. Granted this isn't apples-apples since I was doing a 3-series, but I just turned in GF's diesel on Saturday and replaced it with CPO gas. Anyway the note went from 2.9% to 1.49% based on adding the maintenance. So adding the maintenance ended up costing me only $1500, which is one brake job. And since I am only planning on keeping the car 3 years, figure 60% of that I will actually pay for (did a 5-year note since the $ was so cheap).

So I'm still waiting on Fields to reach out, and am going to start going with other dealers quotes as well. If anyone has a dealer they've had good experience with I would love recommendations, other wise l be cold calling!

Check with GOLFFRR from the pricing thread, I think his dealership writes a LOT of these at good deals and may not need to see the car. How it all works I am not entirely sure, but he and I chatted about it quite a while ago.

Good to see numbers since I'm still not sure I will go that route.

Yeah just put in a little work and then decide. The worst kick in the balls is you decide not to get it for $3K and find out a month later you could have had it for $1500 and would have gotten it for that.

It's all a lot to process and not consistent dealer to dealer. And it all changes if you already own the car vs lease end buyout vs CPO. Then on top of that what's covered on a 2014 isn't the same as a 2017, certain things transfer to new owners and others don't.

When I was in with the sales manager on Saturday he literally said to me "either you own a lot of BMWs or spend a lot of time reading because no one asks me this stuff. Ever."

Oh man, same here. I had $15,000 of covered repairs to my '07 E90 between 55k and 85k miles. Thank god I had a legit aftermarket warranty. Best $2,200 I've ever spent.

All the fuel injectors
2 window actuators
1 turbo
valve cover gasket
pcv valve
HPFP
1 A/C Repair

Who or what does one consider to be a 'legit' 3rd party warranty company?

I have never taken an extended warranty out for anything and I am way ahead. Most of them are fine print scams.

I took the BMW plan for 7 years/70k miles, based on my usage. As part of the original deal, it was about two grand, part of that due to the lower mileage. I figured one trans repair in the last three years would make it worthwhile, but it is a crapshoot, of course. Given the direction of the industry for manual trans, I do plan to make this car a keeper.

It also depends on when you take the warranty. Definitely do it towards the end of original, but beyond that whether or not you are doing a lease buyout, getting a used car, etc. having a financing event can impact the decision as well. You often get a discount on MF from BMWFS if you roll the extension into the financing. Just got a 3-year old 328 w. 19K for GF, by the time I got the discount on the interest rate (which was REALLY low to begin with) getting the CPO with Maintenance out through 6/100K only ended up costing me $1500. No brainer at that point, that's one brake job.
