Inspired by the other thread: 228i M-sport vs. 2015 Mustang Ecosport?
The latter should be way less expensive, and I'm not convinced it will be any less of a performer.
Thoughts? |

After a lot of research, these are my top two choices, although I'm not necessarily set on the 4 cyl for the new mustang since pricing and stats haven't been released.
I am heavily leaning towards the 228 MSport at this point under the assumption it'll be offered with xdrive. If BMW doesn't offer AWD for the states, it'll come down to the difference in price and handling. |

It's funny, one of the March car magazines I just read had about 5 current Mustang owners write letters and they all hated the looks of the new Mustang. I like the looks I guess because I'm not emotionally attached to it like the current owners are.

Hey I like Ford, they didn't cost the US taxpayers $10 billion like GM. I hope they do well to prove The GM decision wrong. Really glad we bailed out an Italian company, if BMW ever falls on hard times maybe the US will bail them out like Fiat.

OMG a BMW with a 4 cylinder?? It will probably weigh close to the M235I and be around 300hp. What direction did the other thread go before being closed? New Mustang really livens things up, harder to justify the 2 series price tag for some. |

Yeah have to agree, the Mustang is rather compelling, and its come down to either the 2 series or the 5.0/Ecoboost 4banger. Ultimately, lease residuals are much better on BMW's than Fords and since that's the route I am going the BMW makes more sense today. I think they will both be a riot to drive personally.

I saw the new mustang at Barrett Jackson and it is a big improvement over the current generation not sure why folks want to compare cars that are so different. The 4 cylinder mustang will be in a lot of rental fleets and will be on just about every block in America. Having said that everyone should buy and drive what they want, after all it is your money. I think the early reviews on the 2 series are showing it is a special car and like many BMWs has intangible characteristics and high quality engineering that few manufactures have been able to replicate.

I sat in both today at the Toronto car show and to me the 235 felt like it was just the right size, and the Mustang felt much too big - it's over a foot longer, and 5 inches wider.

I understand the value prop of the 2015 Mustang, (it's a great car with a great engine, in an affordable package), but I just don't understand how people are cross-shopping it with the 2-series. At 188 inches, I feel the Mustang is in a completely different car class. At that size, I think it's more of a natural competitor to the 4-series.
If the size of the Mustang doesn't lessen it's appeal to you, then why are you even considering the 2-series? Why not look at the 4-series instead, then? And I'm not being mean, I'm just honestly and genuinely curious. |

I guess for me personally, size matters, a lot. I've become slightly disillusioned by the general ballooning of car sizes these days. Give me a small, sporty coupe, sedan, or hatchback and I'm a happy camper. (Hence my interest in the 2-series.) But, I understand people have different tastes, values, and priorities, so to each their own. Thankfully, today's diverse car market can just about afford to appease everybody's different tastes. |
