Speedometer vs GPS

I noticed the other day that my speedometer is showing slower than using GPS. Anyone else test this out? I doubt this is just my car?

For reference, I have the 2016 228i with M-sport package and the Bridgestone run flats.

So at 60 mph its a consistent 2 mph slower on the GPS

At 65 mph its 3 mph slower, it appears the faster you go the farther off it is.

At highway speeds, my GPS will read 1 - 2 miles per hour lower than the speedometer. This is typical of all 4 cars I've owned and most rental cars I've driven.

This is rehasing info that has already been well documented - do a site-search for the details.

TL;DR - they set speedos to read about 4% high so as to meet European and American rules that the speedo can NEVER read low, and this gives a safety margin.

My speedo is 2 mph faster than actual vehicle speed. If I need to be at 65mph on the highway, I have to set cruise control to 67.

At 40-45 mine is off 2 and 70+ 3, keeps you from getting as many tickets.

Thanks, good info.

Wasn't sure if maybe it had to do with varying wheel and tire options... now I know.

Even this is against common sense (expressed by other posters in this thread), I also have noticed GPS speed being actually higher than my speedo indicates. On the autobahn, I reach fuel cut-ff by speed limiter with my speed almost exactly at some 255 km/h - reading the GPS-based speed on Toorque Pro or Dashcommand is some 268 km/h. Have no idea why...

All the BMWs we have ever owned over a 20-year period had the same speedo problem. I used to wonder if this affected the odometer as well, so that the warrantees were for shorter periods than we thought. But BMWs are not that old school: the speedometer and odometer are independent.
It does work as a nanny and has probably saved me big bucks in speeding tickets over the decades.

I checked a local dealer and he claimed there was no way to correct the error. What or how do you code it out?

Dealer won't do it.

You need to read on F22 coding cheat sheet http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=997749
