Speedometer vs GPS
I noticed the other day that my speedometer is showing slower than using GPS. Anyone else test this out? I doubt this is just my car?
For reference, I have the 2016 228i with M-sport package and the Bridgestone run flats. So at 60 mph its a consistent 2 mph slower on the GPS At 65 mph its 3 mph slower, it appears the faster you go the farther off it is. |

At highway speeds, my GPS will read 1 - 2 miles per hour lower than the speedometer. This is typical of all 4 cars I've owned and most rental cars I've driven.

This is rehasing info that has already been well documented - do a site-search for the details.
TL;DR - they set speedos to read about 4% high so as to meet European and American rules that the speedo can NEVER read low, and this gives a safety margin. |

At 40-45 mine is off 2 and 70+ 3, keeps you from getting as many tickets.

All the BMWs we have ever owned over a 20-year period had the same speedo problem. I used to wonder if this affected the odometer as well, so that the warrantees were for shorter periods than we thought. But BMWs are not that old school: the speedometer and odometer are independent.
It does work as a nanny and has probably saved me big bucks in speeding tickets over the decades. |
