LSD - is it available at the port?
I called BMW genius and patiently waiting a response to hear if LSD is available as a port installed accessory.
Anyone know the answer to this question that recently added it to a future delivery or took delivery in the last days / week? M235i = 8AT and delivered to PCD (Charleston VPC) Thank you in advance. -Greg |

I'm a genius. Just checked by trying to build a m235i with lsd. The option wasn't available.

Mine was ordered and LSD was installed at the port. Find an agent who knows facts. Unless something changed for 2016, the LSD has to be a port installed option if you ever want to compete in SCCA races. Plus it saves a little extra on the install costs.
If you want me to double check with my local M Dealership (one of the few in the US), let me know.

It surprises me that an LSD is even available for the 235 anymore. Once installed you're about $4k from the M2. Minus well over $4k worth of brakes, suspension, engine upgrades, navigation, etc.
Is it the same LSD that the M2 comes with? I would guess not?? |

The m235 is a regular adjustable drexler and the m2 has a m active differential that's electronically adjusted

When I was shopping for a M235i, I used the online builder on the BMW site. The LSD was an option, but sometime over a few weeks early this year, it disappeared. This all seemed to coincide with the official announcement of the M2. The only place I could find now, to purchase an LSD for the M235i are third party sellers online.

So, I spoke to Vince at genius and he confirmed it is available for port install. However, at the time I didn't have a production number as I didn't want to bother my CA until I knew it was available - LSD at port is make or break for me. Anyway, fast forward to Friday 4/8 pm and spoke to Adam with a production number and requested z7a to be added. Currently waiting and hoping for a call on Monday 4/11 it was added. Stay tuned... Update for everyone: LSD is not available for port installed option anymore. BMW genius was citing that the installation time was too long.
Can be installed at the dealer! |

No more port install, therefore, one cannot roll the cost into a lease/finance option.. Plus you're stuck with the sky high dealer labor rates, if you choose to add it aftersale.. I bit the bullet and paid for 5.5 hours @ $150/per hour to have one installed recently and the dealer refused to budge on the installation time required.. Judging from the obvious lack of support, it almost seems like BMW is making it intentionally difficult for someone to acquire this LSD unit.. :

Well, youngsters, LSD is a controlled substance that...oh, sorry, you mean Limited Slip Differential. Never mind.
I bet the reason they dropped it was due to the introduction of the M2, which comes with one from the factory. A loaded 6-speed M2 runs around $53.5 K, and one with the DCT is right at $57K. That includes the "Executive" package and the few items on the build-it-yourself website (most all options on an M235 are already included on this car).

How can one tell if an existing M235i has the LSD installed? I'm looking at a few pre-owned cars, and other than asking the owners, is there an easy way to tell if it had the LSD?

My LSD was installed at the beginning of February, for my March 9th PCD. I think that all are right with the M2 being advertised, and BMW wants to generate more interest there. Am I sorry that I couldn't get the M2 for just about the same money? Yes, but you know, I rather like what I got, plus it blends in with other gray cars on the road enough, not to be a cop magnet, like an M2 would be. And, later this Summer, quite possibly a tune is in the works for a bit more zip. |

Hemi - you're absolutely correct. Just as with any M-car, the negotiation room is much smaller because they're probably produced in smaller numbers and the average dealer only gets so many per year, etc. Our dealer here in Wilmington, NC, got their 1st one last week, and I expect it's already spoken for. This is going to be just like the 1M - limited production, limited colors and options, and a take-it-or-leave-it pricetag. Ordering one is bound to imply a long wait time due to the limited production. Who knows if they'll even keep the M235i/M240i with the pricing being so similar? The 1M was a considerably higher-priced car than the 135i, but its exclusivity has made it hold its value if you can even find one for sale.

hey guys, sorry about resurrecting an old thread, but how much should I expect to pay if (a) I install an M Perf at the port in a new car or (b) get a used car and install an aftermarket LSD (like a quaife or wavetrac)
I assume with (a) there is a slight chance to get some money back by selling the original core, but how? Can someone give some light on either option? Thanks |
