AC came on all on its own??

Ambient temp was 14C (57F), I had the fan on, the AC off and the temp dials set to 18C (64F).

After around 20 minutes of driving, I heard the AC come on (slight hissing and gurgling type of noise), and felt a blast of cold air.

It stayed on for while, got too cold and I had to turn the temp dial up to 21C (70F).

After 5 minutes or so, the AC seemed to turn itself off. It then got too hot after a while, so I had to turn the temp dials back to 18C (64F).

All through this time, the AC button was off (ie light was off).

Is that normal?

Don't know if it's "normal", but I've noticed that if I have the temp dialed at 16C, the AC will occasionally come on by itself even though the AC is turned off
It appears only to happen if the AC had been turned on in the most recent outing and the temp dial was set at its lowest setting (ie 16C).
In fact I have have noticed that if the temp is dialed to 16C and you turn off the AC, cold air will continue to come out until the temp dial is turned up to a higher setting.
It can be a bit of a nuisance particularly if starting up the car on a cool morning to get a blast of cold air.

If there's a lot of humidity in the air, it can turn the compressor on to dry things out, even with the compressor (A/C button) turned off. If you press the "defrost" button, it will do the same thing, regardless of what temperature you have it set for.

I've caught myself thinking I'm turning the radio on and accidentally push the A/C controls and turn it on.

It might be the air handling settings, Auto or Manual. At least, my car has the selection, and it does seem to make a difference.
