First Year Model Woes

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
People reading this are more than like early adopters and are considering the new 2 series as their next car. How concerned should we be about reliability and long term issues that often plague a new model, especially a completely new product line like the 2 series? Would you postpone your purchase a year or two to see what fixes / improvements are made?

I would be worried and probably not get a first year model such as the F30 or F30 M3 especially when there is also a new motor involved.

Having said that, the M235 is not a new car, it's a 135 in different body style. The M2 (if it ever comes) may or may not end up being a new car.. The 1M was a parts bin car and therefore I wouldn't have been concerned with a first MY car if I had purchased a 1M

+1... the engine is pretty much the one from the M135 so powertrain is well tested already

+1 not really that worried.

The 2 series (all models) are based off of the current european F20 models, which have been out for over a year now.

The M235i engine is has the N55 that has now been out for awhile now (LCI e82 models). I would be more worried about the 4 cylinder turbo since that has been having some issues, but that will happen regardless what model you get.

Come on now. With BMW? I would be very worried. You know it. That is exactly why you started this thread. You are very concerned, but are hoping to find someone to bring you back from the ledge. I would go with your gut feeling on this one.

I don't care if it's the same spitting car. Historically BMW just has not been very consistent with first model implementation. Sometimes they get it right, most times not. There is truth behind the legend. I'll be the first to admit that my first year model e90 (2006 330i) was pretty bullet proof. No major problems to report. But, mostly an exception to the rule.

Anyone care to start a list with first year model problems?

I'll be waiting out first MY this time around. I had one of the first E82 135 produced. It was in the shop every other month, twice towed. That experience made me despise an otherwise terrific car. The bugs and rattles were sorted by 2nd year of ownership but my relationship with the car was tainted at that point. Fortunately, i got plenty of seat time with other models, confirming the smaller variants are my preference.

Let's not kid ourselves, sure it's built on M135i but it's still a new model, very likely new engine management and mechanic bits.

But really, it'll be great. You guys should get one right away...share some photos

I too had an early E82 135--first or second one in Indiana if I remember right...and maybe I was just lucky, but I didn't have any of the HPFP issues that plagued the N54, or the wastegate rattle...

I think some of this is luck of the draw...but I would also assume (perhaps incorrectly) that BMW has improved upon their manuf. techniques since the E82 was first produced...the N55 has been around for a while, so shouldn't be any problems there...

I am cautiously optimistic.

Another first year E82 135i owner. I had plenty of HPFP issues, but that engine was new to the E8x chassis and new to BMW the year before. The F22 will be using an engine that's been around for years. Our E82 had plenty of other issues, but nothing that I don't expect with any BMW, honestly.

I would not wait if i was in the market for a new car. In most cases most folks turn, trade, lease, sell there cars for a 3 years and move to another...as i, we, get restless for a new ride after a few years. BMW gives you 4 yrs/50,000 miles of no cost reliability...I would not be concerned at all. As i was buying my 135i used with 9,0000 miles on it only to have HPFP issues after the 3rd drive..Yes, i was pissed off but after being fixed the car has been perfect. IMO the M235 is going to be BMW's best enthusiast car next to the M3 or the later M2...The others are just toooooo big and heavy. Me, i can't wait to drive the M235....Yes, for me it's up against some stiff competition as i want a 2014 Porsche BoxsterS as my first choice and the new Corvette Stingray as another car i want to test drive....After owning a Miata for the past year after i sold my 135i...I want another convertable, i found its so much more fun for me to put the top down.. It's not all about being on the track for most..it's about having fun on the road and the M235i will be amazing,,,and yes it will have a convertable..Can't wait!!!!!

Ditto. But I do hope they install the factory aux oil cooler under the front right bumper in all models. My N55 335 doesn't have it and I limped it on the track. Made for quite a lacking Ultimate Driving Experience.

Bought the "Year 1 of 1" 128i ragtop in March 2008 and 50K Kms onward and zero, zilch, nada issues so far.
That said, I do expect those year one production problems to hit sooner or later, which is why I will be trading it in for a new ragtop (2-series or CLA or A3/S3) before the end of year 7.

My 2001 E46 M3 and current 2006 M Coupe were both part of the ----first month--- of production for their respective roll outs.

As many of you probably recall, the E46 M3 had a couple or three recalls for engine related matters. I eventually needed an engine job due to carbon build-up at the 60K - 4 1/2 year mark, but fortunately had gotten the extended warranty so it was covered in full.

The M coupe (which uses the same engine) has not had any problems except for a fuel pump which I had repaired during the first few weeks of ownership. (I brought it in for service once it started making noise). Eventually, they did a recall on the model for the fuel pump.

I don't regret either of the above decisions.

You guys mention 4 year warranties, which is fine, but I guess I was thinking a bit more long term. I too had a 2001 E46 m3, and I don't care what they say, the latter models seemed more solid, with less rattles. Oh well, such is the price we pay.

This is a good point--I never buy my cars. always lease...that way I get something new every three years.

But the longevity question is a valid one for sure....
