BMW Hints at 2 Series by Revisiting 02 Series Model History?

With the 2 Series coupe set to make its debut later this year (production begins in November), BMW may be sending out teaser signals with this recent video.

Quote:
Originally, it was only an internal designation, but these digits were to become the stuff of legends: 2, later 02. In 1966, volume production started up for the 02 Series. This series was extraordinarily successful in reinterpreting the concept of the sports saloon and played a major role in motor sport long after production had come to an end.

One day I will have a 2002 Turbo sitting next to my e30 in my garage and I will have to spend 30 minutes trying to decidewhat I should drive.

These old commercials are funny. Overtaking in corners and always driving in faster side on the road.

Me too,

Although a 5 cylinder is strangely missing from the current modular set-up. That might be nice, they sound better than 4s.

What is it strange? I'm not sure BMW has ever made a 5-cylinder, outside of aircraft engine, maybe. The I5 is Audi's historical favorite.

Not strange in terms of heritage sorry.

I suppose it was strange to me in terms that they are pushing ahead with a modular 500cc per cylinder approach with 3 cylinder engines now on the horizon. Often the downside of the 6 is the heavier front end, yet the 4s never sound as good or as smooth. A compromise for a performance model could have been a 2.5 5 cyl that is all I meant. I do like the note of the focus ST 2.5 5 Volvo engine.

5cyl is heavier than 4cyl. and not run so smooth and rev up so fast than 6cyl. because need balance shaft. Not very good platform and either it´s not ligth weigth. I wound 2.5L Audi R5 engine weigth (183kg), Bmw I6t weigth 190kg.

Love nostalgia. I hope the new 2 captures the spirit of the original. The 1 series was supposed to be the reincarnation of the 2002 but it really wasn't.

200 plus km on the road with one hand on the steering wheel while talking to the video camera. You got to love those fun loving Germans! 2002 tii was the car that I fell in love with back in the 1970s.

That's probably a little high - they don't want to get too close to the upcoming M3/4

Ah, I see what you mean. Yeah, I have to admit that while I appreciate all the inherent benefits of an I6, the sound of an I5 is just incredible. As Holander pointed out, there some significant downsides to an I5 though. I'm not sure BMW would make those sacrifices when the gap between I4 and I5 is so tight.

Is the 2 Series going to be the BMW version of the Toyota GT86? It depends on weight I guess. And BMW will ask 10K more (for a 128i).
