Temp gauge

Hi yall. Tomorrow I'm placing my order for either a M235i MT or a 435i MT. I was looking online and it looks like the M235i comes without an engine temp gauge unless you order the tech package. Is this true? With the tech package my M235i is only 3,000 less than my almost comparably equipped 435i Msport optioned how I want it.

There's an OEM look ac vent gauge avail for a couple hundred bucks. Or option the digital steering wheel which shows temps.

If you're worried about temps you must run your car hard. And if you're going to track it, the M235 is the better car IMO

I gotta assume that we could did a way to code the temp gauge to persist. Kinda like the E92 being able to code in the digital speedo and accurate speed too. The temp gauge is in the hidden tools, so we know it exists.

Can't believe people choose which car to buy on the basis of an engine temp guage? Really?

There IS a gauge if you buy the tech package - it is just contained within a menu and isn't on the cluster.

Yes really! An ultimate driving machine with a history of heat soak, high oil temps would have an oil temp gauge and a real "car person" would care.

And real "car person" wouldn't mind installing an extra gauge or two to keep an eye on temps. Anyone who truly tracks a car and relies on the OEM gauge is an IDIOT IMHO. That's asking for a vague, inaccurate reading that could mean the difference between running hot and blowing an engine.

I don't know where this entitlement came from but its freaking ridiculous. If you expect BMW to make the perfect car for everyone it would have over 100k in options and weigh anywhere from 2,900 lbs and 4,500 lbs.

Hidden menu. Yeah, I've tried to use that and it's tedious.

My opinion is that this doesn't much count as a gauge.

I am thinking about getting the vent gauge but don't know much about them. Would that be equally inaccurate since it's just getting info from the data port? Is there a better option out there?

Because no BMW has ever overheated, right?

I find it funny how the fanboys want to keep making excuses for this dumb oversight. BMW done goofed in leaving out a temp gauge, no two ways about it. You should not have to buy an aftermarket gauge on a $50k sportscar, every car I have ever driven has had a way for the driver to know at a glance (without having to tab through some hidden menu) what his engine temp is.

Manufactures maybe need to be sent a message, and if it means not buying their car because of stupid stuff like this, then so be it. Between this and the Active Sound you cannot disable...

I'm confused a bit. I thought the temp gauge was a nearly useless water temp gauge. Someone correct me if I am wrong. I was also under the impression that the P3 doesn't give an oil temperature either.

Personally, I don't care about a water temp gauge that is essentially reads cold/normal/hot. I do care about oil temperature, though.

Right - it isn't part of the cluster, but the info is available.

It is also in front of you if you get the M performance steering wheel.

I agree that it is an idiotic omission, that much is obvious. I think it makes the cluster look unfinished too, so there is a cosmetic detriment.

However, pointing out that there are other solutions available to get this information doesn't, IMO, make that person a fanboy. To me, we are similarly situated individuals, who have and enjoy the same car, and are trying to figure out a workaround. Isn't that the point of forums anyway?

Every person here has the ability to "vote" with her or her wallet - and that is a great choice to have. I am less bothered by it now than I was when I first found out there was no gauge, and my car was already on a boat...but would it have kept me from buying the car? No. But if that is how you feel, you're definitely entitled.

My $.02...

Fair enough... I meant no insult to you personally. I was more speaking to the people that say "well, what do you need it for anyway?" I think it lets BMW get away with these kind of things because people will just buy their cars anyway...

For me, I think there are four essential pieces of information that should be available at a glance on the cluster. Especially on a high performance car, but applies to any. Speed, RPM, Temp, and Fuel.

Some bean counter just decided "our customers don't care about that" and decided to delete it for no good reason. How much does a temp gauge cost? $2?

This oversight can be be fixed via a software update. With the amount of complaining we are making about this it might be updated in the near future. They can easily add this in to the B/C stalk switch. I'm getting ready to start my BMW coding exercise in the next couple of weeks and see what can be done using the built in controls. I know the digital speedo can be added on the display for sure. Let's see if the temperatures can be added as well.
