Insurance increases - your experiences?
I purchased my 2016 228i in mid-2016, and at the time, the insurance costs seemed incredibly cheap. Insurance costs have increased significantly - an increase of 25.9% in less than 18 months. My most recent statement includes the message: “the claim experience on your make and model of vehicle has resulted in an increase to your vehicle rating group for collision/comprehensive coverage”. I have had no tickets, accidents, claims, or other events that might affect my personal policy premiums, so the insurer’s explanation seems reasonable.
Are other owners seeing similar policy increases? I know that insurance costs are highly variable based on location, driver profile, and other factors, but I am curious if other 2-series owners are seeing similar policy increases. I have 2 cars (third car is with Hagerty) and homeowners insurance with the same company - I’m wondering if I should start shopping around for insurance on the BMW, or if the insurance increases are reasonable and expected regardless of insurer. |

I would shop it. My insurance was increasing like crazy with State Farm and I got a quote from ESurance and it was like 60% of the price. Insurers often get beat up on claims and their rates increase across the board. Find another one.

Mine also went up by around the same amount. Many calls to my company yielded nothing. Same crap about more accidents higher repair costs etc but no real details on how they calculate a raise like this. The only thing I noticed was a change in geographical location, again details they would not give me, but I suspect they have changed me from rural to urban as we live on the outskirts of Ottawa.
Tried several other companies and they were all close so some collusion going on in setting rates. As background, I haven't made a claim in over 20 years but still get screwed. |

Mine went down going from a $50K M235 coupe to a $60K M235 convertible. Go figure.

You should shop insurance around every two or three years, regardless of the type of car you own.

We have State Farm and our rates have been increasing little by little. Usually once your car hits 3 years old, you start seeing bigger jumps because the car is more affordable thus more bozos wrecking and speeding. I'll also say that State Farm may not be the cheapest but they have always been fair and responsive when we've had claims. Cheap insurance often does not equal the best service. |

Like jdgamble and xtuvjet, I have State Farm. And like xutvjet said, it's definitely trickier to switch once you have multiple types of policies and are getting the discounts. I think I will shop around at the next renewal -- I'm probably going to get rid of car #2 in the summer, and will then lose the multi-car discount with State Farm.

all i know is when i totalled my 228i in an accident that was essentially my fault, my insurance paid me the sticker price for the car without any hassle or questions. i know im paying more than some cheap shit like esurance or whatever, but its already paid for itself in full and the service has been well worth it.

I went from Allstate to Safeco. For some reason Geico gave he very high rate. My home policy is also with Safeco and it went down a bit this year. Just switched my liability policy as well, my previous agent wanted to charge me $100 premium on top of what insurance wanted, switched and ended up paying $175 less in total.

When I moved from FL to AL my insurance on a 2015 GT 5.0 and a 2012 C6 Grand Sport dropped about $300 a year for both. After selling the C6 private & the GT @ Car Max, I was a very surprised to see the rate on a near $60K 2018 m240i convertible near the same price I was paying for the two previous sport cars. This was with State Farm, it definitely pays to shop around. I decided to go with Gieco and put all three cars (2018 BMW, 2015 CRV, 2015 Mazda 3) plus umbrella insurance for around $50 a year more than what I was quoted just to insure the BMW alone.
