Anyone planning to get the M2 Comp carbon fiber roof installed on their 2er?

I was sure someone would beat me to it, but since no one else has, I'll be the the first to admit I am drooling over the thought of a carbon fiber roof on my m240i.

In the M2 Competition forum, there are so many people crying murder over the thought of a BMW dealership having to install the optional carbon fiber roof for the M2 or M2C. I can't really blame them for fearing shoddy dealership work, but no one is forcing us to take our cars to the bad dealerships. I figure after enough time goes by and more and more dealerships get trained up to do this type of work, we should have a pretty good idea of who is able to do this type of install correctly.

Now, I have no idea how much this will cost, but if I can get both the M2 carbon fiber roof and M Performance LSD installed at < $5k, I'm game to do both in one shot vs. simply trading in my m240i LCI for the M2C. I still feel like my m240i 6MT w/ BBS wheels, carbon fiber roof, and LSD at under $50k out the door is a better value proposition than a $65k+ M2C. I'd just buy a Porsche once I step into that price territory.

What do you suspect it will cost for just the CF roof install? I'm guessing ~$2500. Anyone else thinking of doing the same or perhaps considering trading up to the M2C?

I think it's around 15 lbs??? LOL. More if you are going from a moonroof to CF roof. Supposedly, it has a more significant effect on the measured center of gravity than the weight savings alone would suggest. I have the moonroof delete on mine, but honesty just want a carbon fiber roof because of the sex appeal. . Not even gonna lie. And no, I don't believe in wrapping parts in CF for the show.

If dumping a moon roof at the same time, likely a lot (dealer told me moon-roof and mechanism weighs close to 90 lbs). Additionally removing that bloat from the worst possible place will improve handling.

For a Moon-roof delete car, probably not a huge diff (guess around 10-12 lbs) compared to the cost.

Same here, moon roof delete, but I still want the roof because it would be the coolest thing ever.

Most people would be like "nice carbon roof wrap" and I would just stand there smiling.

I would love to get the ARMA speed hood too, but get it painted.

So they really are considering offering a carbon fiber roof as an option ? And it can be retrofitted?

Do they need to remove the windshield, rear-window and headliner ? Is the new roof bonded on ? Or is it a combo of screws and adhesive ?

Wait a second...I get the other performance related motivations, but you know women who make a “go-no go” decision based on the material of the roof of your car? Who are these people? Imagine what might happen if you replace all the shingles on your roof at home!

Nah, I like the sunroof on this little M240i beasty. I am trying to find a way to pick up an M2 Comp which I'd get with the CF roof...I'd have to sell some of my custom guitars though.

I feel ya. I could do the same with a totally unnecessary firearms collection... and I briefly thought about it. However, it's good to diversify both in terms of investments and also the cars we drive. Price comparisons aside, I can see myself keeping the 2er forever and one day adding a PDK equipped 718 GT4 instead of the M2C just for the sake of not having a pair of 2ers in my garage. As they say, variety is the spice of life!

Having paid for a lot of custom work over the years, I'm going with $2500 X 2. Just guessing, of course.

I'd have it done at a qualified body shop.

Agreed. The amount of work is rather astounding. For one, the headliner, rear glass, front glass, and everything down to the winder ledge would need to be removed from the interior and then protected due to the cutting of the metal roof. Then the CF roof would be glued in. With a BMW CF roof, yeah, $5,000 might be low for everything.

CF is cool and all, but lets be real, not a whole lot of weight is being saved in relation to the cost. It's just the metal roof skin we're talking about. Plus, you're still replacing with another, slightly lighter skin. BMW lists the CF roof savings at 11lbs. The moonroof delete on the 2 series is far more substantial and cuts out an easy 40lbs from the roof. That's something that can really be measured on a track and by a well-tuned driver. The CF roofs in these street-based turbo BMWs is more of a gimmick considering how heavy the cars are from the start and the creature comforts included.

If you want a CF roof, you're better off picking up a used M4 or getting the M2C and doing the CF roof option. Keep in mind you won't be able to get an M2C at MSRP. Those things will be selling for substantially more during the first year or so. When the M2 came out in 2016, they were selling for $10K+ over MSRP for quite a while.

If that ends up being the case, I will pass. I guess we will have to wait and see.

+1

Easy 5k all in. Just look at the price on the OEM CF mirror caps. They’re ~$700. The rear spoiler is around the same price I believe. And these parts are a small fraction in size, compared to the entire roof. I bet just the roof alone would be $3500, plus crazy labor hours.

My interest in a CF roof was never real high, but somebody recently posted pictures of a crashed M5 belonging to one of the BMW bigwigs, and there was nothing left of the roof but some tattered shreds at the edges of the rails. It made me realize that this basically turns the car into a hardtop convertible in terms of safety. Once I've done the hood, fenders, and door skins I might rethink this (so, next life at earliest).

Might actually be worse than a convertible, although I'm no engineer. I've had both and the windshield surround is much beefier on the convertible then there's the rear pop up safety features as well. Especially not coming from the factory but done after the fact would make me nervous.

Saw a guy on the M2 forum who did just that TYSP33D on making his M2 a full track build (this thing is insane, got the whole thing shaved down to under 3,000 pounds)...

I love that they still leave a place for the antenna on it.
