NYIAS and 2 Series competition

Watching New York debuts and impressed with some new offering.

2015 Audi s3 - small, light 300hp, 0-60 4.7. Sits on VW MBQ platform.
2014 MB CLA 45 AMG - 360 hp. 0-60 4.5 and wow of a 2.0 turbo screamer
Subaru wrx concept - some rumors of even base wrx having 275-300hp, STi will dial that number up 10-20%. Great looking and if its based off brz platform - will handle like a dream.

I am aware that those are sedans, all are AWD and 2 of them are FWD based AWD...

I know BMW 2 series will not be a light car and m2 will need to be dialed in to beat the competition.

It could be just my personal interest in a smaller sporty sedan, but at NYIAS, BMW's display just doesn't seem very exciting (no debuts of any truly exciting models didn't help) considering the CLA45 was revealed in Mercedes' exhibit right next to BMW's.

BMW is now playing a catch up game against the CLA45 and S3 unfortunately.

I am really excited about this whole segment, there are going to be some great choices. I lean towards the M235i because it's the only one with rear wheel drive but it's hard to go wrong with the MB or Audi.

This!

My younger brother just bought a 2013 S4 last night and for $47k after negotiation, it's a hard price to beat when looking at a similar performance 335i/xi.

I currently drive a 2011 135i and my lease will be coming up within a years time. I would like a small sedan with AWD, but also want a sportier car like my 135i, without spending $53k+ after options. As of right now, BMW offers no option for a car I would like and I'm sure I'm not alone with other potential customers.

So, yeah, BMW is going to have to play catch up. I am really anxious to see what the M235i has to offer and I might go with that in the end, but I really would like 4 doors this time.

I'll be going to the NYIAS next Wednesday and I'll be more interested in checking out the CLA45 AMG and the Audi S3, although if I were to go Audi, I would just jump up to the S4. It would of been nice if BMW announced their 2 series at this show, as it might of distracted buyers from the Audi and Mercedes booth

I'm really waiting to see the M235i before my final decision, but the S3 sedan is definitely being considered(although I would of preferred the Sportback). If they can deliver in looks, options, performance and interior quality, I'll be all over the 2er.

It's between the MKVII Golf R , the S3 Sedan and the M235i, but BMW needs to win back some mindshare and show the damn thing in the next couple months.

great post, I am thinking the same exact cars. I am ready to give up a 6mt,( poor reviews) and 2 doors, for a super sedan under 50,000.

BMW's next gen 1-series platform (which will be FWD/AWD) will compete with those cars. 2 series is a RWD platform coupe (possibly gran coupe). I don't think these share market at all.

Great thread. I'm also driving a 2011 135i with it's lease expiring in a year.
Love the car, but it's time for me to decide whether I buy it coming off lease -which is tempting- or simply go on to another car.

The Audi....particularly the S3 is very attractive. Just judging from the photos it's the best looking Audi sedan in their line-up. They've shortened the front overhang, roofline is beautifully done, base starting 39k for awd, 300hp, sharp interior.
What's not to like?....no manual. Not even in the S3.....at least at this point Audi is saying they won't change their mind. It's 6-spd auto or nothing. I'm a die-hard- this is enough to make me walk away from the car no matter how attractive the design and interior are.

I will be there on Tuesday. Can't wait. Looking forward to seeing the CLA and Stingray in person.

What I like about the A3/S3 is that it picks off where the E46 left off in terms of dimensions for a small sedan Its still a FWD/AWD Audi in the end, but it does keep the small sedan torch burning. BMW really needs to give us a small RWD sedan!

was there last night. Stingray was sexy big time.

CLA45 was nicely done as well, was untouchable on the spinning platform.
S3 was MIA, was shipped to shanhai show, official release Sometime in April..
WRX concept was sexy also, but Subaru has a tendency of toning down significantly for production... and it's many months out...
When is 2 series being announced?

Just got back from the NYIAS.

Earlier in this post, my interest was leaning towards the CLA & S3 for wanting a smaller, sportier sedan without breaking the bank.

Well after inspecting the CLA/CLA45 AMG. I can honestly say that this car didn't really do it for me. I'm not sure what it is, but the AMG didn't impress me as far as aesthetics and interior goes. Both models were on a rotating platform so I couldn't get a closer look. However the AMG models' "Quad Exhaust" was really a single pipe behind each faux dual pipe. Not sure if this is a production model or not, but that to me is a little cheap looking. That's just my opinion.

So now I'm down to the S3, which unfortunately wasn't at the show; M235i, which is yet to be seen and now a 335i M-Sport, but with mild options.

Just thought I'd share my thoughts on that.

On a side note, the one manufacturer that really surprised me was Cadillac. Their whole lineup including the ATS, CTS and even their new ELR plug-in electric car looked really good. The ELR looks really sporty for an electric car that's competing with the Volt.

It definitely does pick up where the e46 left off. The S3 is within an inch or two of the e46's size in every direction. It's going to be an interesting next couple of years to see what BMW can come up with, and if they are able to do it in time.
