I can see this as well. And soft/smooth typically translates to faster, which is why proper damping is so crucial for overall performance and capability.

My previous car was an E91 328iT with sport. Before that I had a zillion E46s in various forms: 330i sedan with sport; 325xiT, M3 Convertible among them.

I now have an M240 convertible. It reminds me most of the M3. I love it and would not go back to any of my previous cars, except perhaps for the M3. It was a stick, a 2006, and super fun to drive. But pretty unforgiving over road imperfections. I downsized to 17-inch Michelin all seasons, which helped somewhat.

The M240 cures the ride issues I felt with the M3. And I hope once I have the LSD installed next week, that will cure my one complaint about my current car: a kind of sloppiness in applying its power through twists and turns.

I would imagine for you, coming from a 2007 328xi coupe and sticking with all-wheel drive for the 2, you will be very happy and it will feel like a natural progression. You will notice the change from hydraulic steering to electronic steering most prominently. And you will notice the turbo engine providing more ready power at slower speeds. AWD should allow smooth application power when and where you need it.

I do feel the 2 series is a bit less luxurious than the 3. So that's a bit of a sacrifice to stay with the smaller form factor and greater fun factor of the 2 versus the new 3 series platform.

My previous car was an e92 335i xdrive coupe, 6 speed manual m sport. I now drive a 2015 m235i w lsd rwd. The only thing that was better in the e92 to me was the steering. The car felt very heavy, cornered blah (xdrive before adaptive), n was Kinda boring even when pushing it hard. The m235i is what I had hoped I was going to get when I got the E92. It feels much lighter, faster, yet more comfortable from going over bumps to just regular every day driving. The handling (I have Dinan springs) I can't even compare n for obvious reasons. Adaptive suspension soaks up the bumps pretty nicely, compared to the crunching I used to feel in the E92. Overall the 2 is far superior in my eyes.

The X-Drive versions of the e9x handled significantly worse than RWD ones. So did ones without sport/m-sport. My m240i handles slightly better than my e90 335i sport did, but with electric steering and adaptive suspension it feels smoother doing so.

I had three, E92 335i (2007), E92 335iC (2010), E92 M3 ZCP (2011). Love the feel of these cars and the interior quality was off of the charts! Have a 2018 M4 ZCP for about a month, insane power is all I can say. I am responding to your thread because I am about to get the M240iX as a daily driver. It's definitely a sleeper, 335HP and 369 FT LBS is crazy power, my E92 M3 ZCP was low on torque and it made me miss my old 335i. Dimensionally, the new 2 series is perfect (IMHO). and is a great looking car, don't second guess the decision.....

I cannot speak to e92 performance, etc - never owned one. I'm here to say that BMW has made great strides on the newer styling imo, especially for the 2- series. To me, all e92 coupes had ultra bland styling, so I always assumed everyone bought them simply for the performance.

I had an '07 E92 328 RWD manual, followed by an E90 335i RWD automatic and a special edition E90 AWD manual. All of them great from different perspectives. Special memories for the E92 - that normally aspirated 6 cyl engine with manual transmission was just special - a true BMW classic! The M235i that I currently have feels like the best out of all 4, with one big minus - steering feel! Very precise, true, but numb! All other aspects - throttle response, transmission, LSD, chassis, etc. - just great.

I have noted several times on this forum that I found the sports suspension of our 2009 E92 coupe very uncomfortable, rock hard and unforgiving. The suspension on our 2015 M235 is better by far, in any mode.
The steering, yes, better, but nothing beats my old 325 for all-around performance, well, except for the fact that it had almost no power compared to the newer models.

For everyone saying the E9x suspension is too harsh, was that with RFT or non-RFT tires?

My e90 was xdrive so I had the crappy suspension and even that was harsh with RFT. When I switched to non-RFT it was night and day. I then added KW-V1 to tighten things up a bit and it was a nice balance.

My current G30 rides pretty well with 19 RFTs but i can still hear the road noise from the RFTs and some harshness

Back in the stone age, 10 years ago, there were no RFTs. Hard as a rock with the sports suspension. Some like it hard.
