So I order a 235 last wednesday and I follow up with my CA for a production number twice. Both times he said he doesnt have a production # and said that the "M" cars takes longer, up to 8 weeks (i know...its not a M car). I told him if you dont have a prod# then that means my car is not ordered.
Im heading to the dealer later to discuss. Any thoughts??

This will be my first BMW so I don't have much experience but I can tell you that I had my production number within 3-4 days after ordering.
Edit: I just checked my text history and it was actually 6 days. I didn't ask for it until day 4 and it took him a couple of days after that to get it to me. |

It took me at least two weeks to get a production number, I don't think you get it until maybe two weeks before the production date is finalized. Mine has been at the port in Germany for 8 days. It all depend on when your dealer had a slot and my dealers slot was 4 weeks after I ordered (approximately).

From what I understand, if the dealer has a production slot and places the order, the production number should be available right away. That's how it worked for me. A slot opened with my dealer a day or two after we agreed on the numbers, and he sent my order sheet with the production number immediately.

That's kind of what it sounds like but I'd call them to make sure. I can tell you that mine is looking like it will take 8 weeks and it was ordered pretty much immediately.

For my June ED, I signed a purchase agreement end of January. At that time they assured me they had a car. Over the next 5 weeks they kept tellling me BMW had not assigned a number yet. When my patience ran out and I pressed them, it turns out that they did not have an allocation and were *waiting/hoping* to get one.
Needless to say I was very unhappy, and contacted the CA, sales manager, and general manager (a personal acquaintance). After that they did get an allocation and get me a production number a week later. In other words, they should get you a number pretty quickly and if they don't push them to make sure they actually have an allocation.

So to drive it all home.. if they HAVE an allocation to give you, they can give you the production number immediately. If they do not have an allocation, they cannot give you a production number and then it is a waiting game until they do get one and assign it to you (assuming there is not someone else ahead of you to receive the scarce allocation...).
I ordered on 3/17, I was told up front there is no was no allocation for me but that I would be the first up for it when it comes in (showed me their dealer report). I was on their wait list for 2 weeks, they then received their allocation and I received my production number immediately, then the VIN came 2 weeks later indicating that production had actually started (4.5 weeks after I ordered). |

Like what everyone else has said, if shouldn't take that long to get a production number unless they don't have allocation. My CA told me something similar: that I should get it in April, closer to pick up date. I placed my order beginning of March. I told him that while I don't doubt him, I would feel better having a production number so I could start planning my trip. He sent me a production number a few days later (about 3-4 days after I placed an order).
The M235i is not a limited or rare car. Dealers are getting more of them in now so you shouldn't have a problem getting one. I don't know where you're located but let me know and I will help you out. |

I concur with all of the others. I ordered on March 4 (228i, not M235), had my production number within an hour, and was told to expect West Coast delivery within 8 weeks. My car is now onboard the Lyra Leader, passing through the Panama Canal today. Ship is expected to dock at Port Hueneme in 10 days, which would be one day short of the 8 week delivery estimate. My guess is that I'll have the car a few days later than the 8 week estimate.
The key is to deal with a large volume dealer with lots of allocation. Mine is the largest on the West coast. Ska, which dealer are you working with? Foreign Motors West used to be the best in MA, but now that they're part of Herb Chambers, who knows? Small volume dealers (like Transatlantic in Hyannis) would likely have much smaller allocations. |

I'm having the same issue. I placed the order three weeks ago and have yet to receive a production number. At this point maybe I'll cancel and wait for a 2015. Then again, my dealer quoted me a really good price and I'm in no rush.

Now it is a 228 , not a 235 but I'm getting my car late next week, seven weeks from order to delivery

ska, there's an entire thread where people have posted their deals; happy reading.
My 228i has an MSRP that exceeds the mfr. lease deal example by $1,550. I'm doing the same down payment as the mfr. lease deal, but my monthly will be $17 less than the mfr. deal despite the higher MSRP. I think that's a decent deal; competitors all wanted more, some much more. I'm in Orange County, CA; my dealer is the largest on the West coast (Crevier Motors). |

Other's have said it's dependent on dealer allotments, but I think I got particularly screwed. I had to wait 3 weeks just for the production number (for a 228i). Production started 3 weeks after that, but delivery is not expected until end of May / maybe June. I'm looking at 13-15 weeks total.

I think about 5% off MSRP for a cash sale seems like it is becoming the standard 'deal' if you shop around aggressively. However, the day before yesterday I saw a dealer in Tennessee had 2 new m235i's listed on autotrader for 8% off MSRP. I think that is the extreme exception to the rule though. I have money down at a dealer to hold their first model year 2015 m235i slot for me. :-)
