he referenced the dampers in the M2 as "being stiffer in Comfort than the M240 is in Sport". I thought the M2 had fixed dampers?

I've watched this guy's videos and like them. What I took away from this vid was that the M2 is more fun and engaging to drive, but in a straight line; not that much faster or in some cases even with the M240i.

Let's stop giving people with just a car and a gopro the right to give journalistic reviews/comparisons.

Why?
For those who bagged after 5 minutes, fine, but the last 5 or 6 are the point of the comparison. Starting in first gear th M2 got off faster, but in all the rolling start scenarios the 240 was as fast or faster. That was the point. Yes there are other significant differences between the cars, but my take away is the the B58 is a beast. |

As someone who has done a few reviews myself, I think everyone can bring something unique to the table. Nothing wrong with that. Most car journalist are just that, journalist. They were not necessarily ever "car guys." I welcome the opinion of someone more like me, the everyday person than a guy that splits hairs because he drives every car on the market for a week at a time for free......

M2 suspension is fixed. I think what he meant is that the M2 is stiffer all the time than the M240i is even in sport. If the M240i suspension is the same as the M235i then I can confirm even in sport its not that "sporty." Still pretty soft with lots of body roll. Somehow BMW found the perfect one size fits all setting on the M2.

What would it take to improve the M240 suspension to be less soft? I dont know a lot <yet> about the adaptive suspension on the 240 |

Pretty excited too, as a friend out of Kelowna is taking possession of his M2 soon and we will be able to do a seat swap on one of our mountain 'tours and I'll be able to see for myself the difference between these two cars. It's such a subjective topic, that I really try not to follow the general reviews or get in on the M2 vs. conversations as I've never driven one, lol. D

D[/QUOTE] You're right, it really is subjective. I find the M2 more comfortable in most situations than I did my M235i in comfort, sport or sport +. Its a very neutral set up that's both comfortable and sporty. Like I said, they really nailed it IMO. |

I didn't do any suspension mods to my M235 so I really don't know. There are many people on here who could probably help you, though. |

The video definitely is proof that what feels quicker/faster isn't necessarily the case or at least, not as dramatic as one thinks. Noise/vibration/harshness and the shape of powerband can greatly impact one's perception of speed. |

As I've said, my tuned M235 was probably just as fast as my M2 but it is the way it made the power that was very different. The m235 had more lag and ran out of steam high in the revs. These traits made for a totally different experience. Not only did it not feel as fast but it was far less enjoyable to drive. |

Too bad? Have you driven an M240? How do the rest of the components stack up? They are different cars. The fact that the new engine performs equally to the M2's isn't "too bad," it is an objective observation, and an interesting one at that. No one is threatening you and your precious M2 (surprise, you have one!) any more than it is a threat to me (I have an M240) that the M2 is a more performance oriented set-up. Defensive much?

The M240i is a great car for what it is and so is the M2 but for me the sum of speed alone does not equate to a car being "a beast." Not defensive but still my opinion. And for what it's worth, I owned a modded M235i that was faster than my M2 so I do know both cars pretty well. I didn't realize you owned an M240 so it was not an attempt to put you down just a response to what you said. |

Well I really enjoyed the video as I'm in the long waiting period for an M2 (another 6 months at least) so am really excited to read or watch ANY new material, especially when it has a different slant, as this one does (I really can't bear to watch yet another of those numerous "drifting" videos). I'm also intrigued to see the comparison between the M240i and the M2 as I almost went for the M240i as I wanted a convertible. Like many I'm surprised to see the M240i is as quick, at least in a straight line, and suppose this is due to the B58 engine. However I can't help feeling the reason why BMW stuck with the N55 engine is because it continues to pull at the top end of the rev scale, unlike the B58. I know, from driving my Elise SC, that half the pleasure is revving right up to the limiter and feeling it pull hard all the way as the engine and exhaust noise scream away (note: the standard Elise exhaust is completely anaemic so I had one specially made which is really loud). Driving fun and sensation is more important to me than outright acceleration capability. By the way I'm wondering whether he had the standard or M-performance exhaust on that M2....

It is subjective. I don't find it too soft at all. For LA roads I think having the three settings is perfect. Having the dampers adjust is one of my favorite things about the car. But I am probably twice your age and proabaly welcome a more compliant ride than dudes in their 20s.
