Used m240i Not Certified Pre Owned

Hey guys. I'm looking into purchasing an m240i, gray with 9800 miles in Universal City, CA. The problem is that the dealer is not selling it CPO. When I had asked why, he started that it's because it has 3 years of warranty left. Then I asked why his other listings were CPO and he said that if I want, I can pay $1500 to get the car certified. My question is should I be concerned and look elsewhere? Could this car have had paintwork or something else that the dealer knows about deeming it not CPO worthy?

It costs the dealership money to give a used car a CPO designation. Given this has over 3 years of the 4 year run in warranty remaining, it would make no financial sense for them to make it a CPO vehicle. It would mean they would have to ask even more for this used car and I have no idea what the market is like where you?re located for 240?s. The fact that they will offer it at an additional fee should give you the reassurance you?re looking for. Here in Canada it?s way more than $1500.Damn at $1500 you should do it assuming it?s an extension of the 4 year bumper to bumper that it now is in Canada... Hope this helps

Get a PPI and do the CPO later just before the original warranty expires if you are going to keep the car. Really not all that complicated.

They typically wont CPO cars with a good amount of warranty left. You can try and negotiate it in there, but in all honesty, the CPO warranty is just ok, if the car has more options on it, I would rather in your place try to negotiate in the platinum warranty, since that's 7year/100k miles and its the full factory warranty essentially.

Your best bet at securing a decent price for that one is usually at time of purchase. CPO comes with 2 different variants, 1 extra year, and 2 extra years, but keep in mind the CPO warranty will not cover interior vehicle electronics. (Navigation etc). You have CPO and you have the Gold extended warranty. You can get the gold one also, its the same crap as CPO, or go for platinum.

That’s where I bought my car. It’s down the street from me. Make sure you walk the showroom and look at the over priced special edition cars they have

I find these comments odd because I picked up my car CPO less than a year old with only 4k miles in it.

Its up to the dealer, a lot will not certify the car that early on because it is a cost they incur. They tend to want to pass that off onto the customer.

And some do the CPO and price their car higher, figuring folks will pay the premium to get the warranty. At the end of the day it's just a marketing game for them.

That said, maybe someone can confirm, I think all service loaners and/or exec demos must be CPO'd before being sold.

I don’t know if things have changed recently, but I bought a 2016 exec demo with <4K miles in mid-2016, and it was not CPO.

I troll cars.com and autotrader regularly because the 235 or 240 is likely my next buy. I also go to SoCal often to surf and check the BMW dealer used car inventory. Almost all used 2 series I see on BMW lots are CPO. The only exceptions I've seen are dealer loaners or in the same MY. For example, almost all 2017s are CPO but most 2018s are not. It seems to be more about the time remaining on the warranty than the mileage on the car. Buying a non-CPO under those conditions would not bother me. However, there are lots of recent year similar low mileage CPOs in SoCal for the same or less money than the non-CPOs I've seen, if you are patient and shop, so the CPOs are a better deal.

I ran into this situation in 2012 when I bought my used 2011 335i from BMW of Beverly Hills. When I asked why it wasn't CPO, yet other used 335i's they were selling were, it was because this car was never privately owned. It went from the dealer lot unsold into the dealers fleet use as a service loaner. 9000 miles later I bought it and kept it until November last year.
