LIDAR on LCI 240i?

Does the 2018 (LCI) m240i use LIDAR for something?

I just installed a MirrorTap for my V1, and turned it on for the first time. It's giving me a persistent laser alert. It went bonkers in my garage, and still intermittently alerted when driving around the neighborhood (at residential neighborhood speeds).

I thought it might be reacting to the LED headlights or angel eyes, but it continued when I turned that all off.

I had it in the exact same position in my 2015 m235i, and never had an issue (once I turned of POP to make it quite complaining about the blind-spot radar when following my wife's 328).

My v1 beeps when i’m backing down the drive, after I open the garage door with the mirror button, and if I wave my hand in front of v1 during that time. Haven’t noticed what it’s signaling, will try to pay attention next time. I do not have pdc on the car, nor mirror tap.

Do you have the driver's assistance package? I wonder if they've added LIDAR to the sensor suite for that.

Usually the K-band gets fixed enabling the Junk-k fighter http://www.valentine1.com/v1info/junk_k_fighter/

but should have no effect on Laser.... I know Volvos and Mazdas have Laser cause V1 will go off when you see one....

My V1 is pretty old, so it probably doesn't have that feature. But this was definitely a laser alert. Since it happened inside the garage, I'm pretty sure there were no Volvos, Mazdas, or Infinities sneaking up on me.

My wife has another V1 in her car; I will turn it on and see if it reacts to me turning on the ignition in the 2er.

If it's Laser, it will show L on the display and blink...

My 2014 V1 had it included but was inactive....
you can check on the homepage on the top right with your serial number...

For V1's with serial numbers ending in 1207 and higher, Junk-K Fighter is paired with Traffic Monitor Filter; both features were activated at the factory.
For V1's with serial numbers ending in 1179-1206, Junk-K fighter is paired with Traffic Monitor Filter but neither was activated at the factory; see links below for activation instructions.
For V1's with serial numbers ending in 1078-1178, Traffic Monitor Filter was installed at the factory without Junk-K Fighter; see Upgrades to add Junk-K Fighter.
For V1's with serial numbers ending in 0301-1077, Junk-K Fighter and Traffic Monitor Filter are available at Upgrades.

It's most definitely a laser alert. I spent some time this evening trying to figure out the source. It seems to be coming from the vicinity of the rear view mirror, possibly from the camera. Has BMW added LIDAR to the driver assistance package?

Looks like this is happening with other 2018 models. Someone had exactly the same issue on an F80:

I almost wonder if they've instrumented the 2018s for some degree of autonomous driving.

What about the active cruise control? Does it use laser to measure distance? Almost has to be something either in the passenger compartment or is being reflected from outside the car.

IIRC, they also say that certain frequencies of light (red, I think) will set it off - certain tail lights were mentioned, but I don't have my info here. I like the V1, but even with the junk-k-fighter it still 'won't ever shut up' - at least it has the bogeys so I can have a better sense of what it is (also noticing how many LEO's cruise w/o any radar active these days).

The m240i is not available with active cruise control. At least not in the US.

Yeah...it's called "instant-on" radar. They can turn it on if they suspect someone's speeding. Used to be done with a handheld radar gun and a tin pie-plate. Ain't technology grand?

Duly noted. Only other thing I can think of is LED tail lights on the car in front...I remember following certain cars with LED rear lighting and I'd get a laser alert every time they'd step on the brakes. The other possibility is something from behind reflecting on the windshield near where the detector is mounted...like a car equipped with active cruise control using laser to measure distance between cars.

My V1 definitely beeps if I wave my hand in front of it, down below the level of the mirror. There must be some light coming from the mirror area that is triggering it.

Mine does exactly that. I can also make it alert “to the rear” by holding my hand beneath and behind it. Looking at the car in the sunlight, I think there’s a laser emitter below the driver assistance camera on the mirror mount.

I’ve been able to get rid of most of the laser false alarms by moving the unit a bit further to the left of the mirror.
