So excited for this car! The fender arches and suspension bits look to be very promising and not all surprising, but pleasant to see nonetheless. It's going to be a long 1.5 years to see a production version of this car.

Bmw is trying to gain entry level buyers but also have enough goodies for those diehard M fans. A lightly optioned M2 with nav and cf roof will run around $59k...add some blings like carbon brakes and we're in M3 territory
Arrival of M2 will put the M3 and M4 Coupe at three years since official introduction, and 2 and a half years since market introduction.
So the next phase of the M3 and M4 Coupe and whether a separate CRT , CSL or GTS would be on the verge of being introduced?

Leaving ample room for the M2 and the next stage of progress of the M3 and M4 to leave room for the next BMW M5.

Surprisingly they do think about this...

I bet the part about the N55 ends up being wrong. It's a fantastic engine, but it will be ten years old by the time this car comes out. Plus, as I have come to understand it, it's some kind of heresy for an M car to use a BMW mainline engine.

Looking forward to seeing where BMW places this car in their performance hierarchy. Specifically in relation to the M3 and M4.

It's what is underneath that counts first , final definition as in body work , details and styling comes later.

I thought everybody would know this by now...

We did not see a final prototype with the final body till May 2010.

The car is influenced by the M235i Racing in its styling because it is in the genes of the compact BMW from the 2002 Turbo to the E30 M3. Its definition also makes it stand out from the M4.

The M2 will launch in 2015. And be on the market early 2016.

Yeah... This made me LOL pretty good. Sir Scott laying the smack down.

Off to a very good start. I like everything I see so far. Excited to see how this progresses to the production car.

OK, let's say 8 years. First N55 application was the 2010 model 535iGT, build dates in 2009. Figure it was around a year or two before it ended up in a car on offer. The M2 hits the market in 2016.

But never mind - the point is that, by that time, BMW will be moving away from the N55 in nearly every other application. I have no inside information, but it seems odd to me that they would use it for an M car at that point in its lifecycle.

Having said that, I have an N55 in my F10 and I think it is wonderful.

BMW did the same thing with the N54 in the 1M, 335is, and Z4 whatever they called it, so why doesn't it make sense????

If this were an open book test on the test mule for the upcoming M2, many people would fail.

I'd imagine 3300 ish. Given that the weight savings in the M3/4 wasn't what we'd hoped, I think 3300-3400 is realistic. I'd be surprised if it weighs the same as the M235i though.

Nevermind the fact that you're grossly inflating the timeline in order to support your point?

Yes, BMW is moving away from the N55 in their mainline production, but remember when the 1M used the N54, even though the N55 was already developed?

The B58 hasn't hit the streets yet, so same game plan here. Use what you know.

None of those cars came out of the M Performance division.
